    Series 3 Roof Console

    Has anyone had any experience in constructing a roof console?
    I'm looking at making one for my S3 ute, probably to keep the CB radio and speakers in.

    Any tips on the best way to go about this?

    seen it done... it is fine unless you are tall.. then it becomes a issue... (personally 6ft 4) lol

    Under 6 Ft.. not hard to do.. and works rather well.

    I have seen it done with speaker raisers and 1 din universal radio mount or 2...

    probably the easiest way to do it besides making some boxes out of wood.

    I have one in my series three, which was in it when I bought it. I'll try and post some photos of it for you. It's made from fibreglass with vinyl covering and looks like it wasn't home made. It has an old C.B. radio in it along with some speakers and a stereo. As I'm only 5'7", it's not a problem for me. The only drama I think I am going to have is fitting sun visors as when lowered, they will be too low to look out the windscreen clearly.

    I built this a few years ago for my truck cab and it works well. I am 6'2" and don't have any problems with visibility or hitting my head.

    Looks nice! How did you attach the console? Is it only those pop rivets?

    I made up the aluminium angle brackets and used them to fix the console to the channel that is attached to the truck cab roof. I then used timber screws to fix through the angle into the console. It is very robust and strong. It hasn't moved at all and I have done quite a bit of driving off road since the installation. The console is made from plywood and is also a very strong and practical material to build with. The speakers work well located in the console too. Quite a solid board to mount them too. The truck cab roof does allow a bit more space to build a console I think as the conventional roof body slopes up from the wind screen at a steeper angle. Hope that helps mate.
