    Glow Plugs

Am I right or wrong please , with the plugs wired in series , If the warning lamp in the dash fails , will that make the whole circuit ie heater plugs not work? I see " if a plug fails" the rest wont work etc but I havent seen if a "warning lamp fails " the rest wont work.

Also - once the ignition is turned and the plugs should start heating , when you crank the engine - do the plugs stop heating or do they stay heating all the time the engine is running?

All replies received gratefully as usual.

    every good wish,

    David.

the warning light is wired in parralel to the main circuit

    for OEM setup

the main circuit is in series, from the drive relay it goes -resistor-G4-G3-G2-G1-earth

the warning light can come off of the switching side of the relay OR off of the switched side.

I personally prefer to have it on the switched side.

the quick and easy way to test for a blown glow plug is to run continuity from one side of the plug to the other with the circuit off.

the field way is to drop the earth wire and run a light down the circuit while its powered up. the point when the light fails to light will indicate that the component upstream of the test light is the first failure. (yes you will get multiple failures)

but be warned, There is a replacement plug that is a 12v glow plug and these are wired in parallel, its kind of entertaining listening and watching the result of a series diesel cold starting with only 1 or 2 cylinders preheating.

I'm going to persevere with series. I'll keep at it until I get it right.

    Thanks for replying.
