    Holden VK EFI

    Hi all,

After a long break from Land Rovers I am back. I just bought a SIII LWB, licenced with a Holden 186. It is in pretty good nick for a 40 year old car, straight panels, free wheeling hubs, complete, and - apart from the conversion - unmolested. Chassis has a bit of rust in the rear but nothing beyond my abilities.

The motor is on her last legs so I am looking to upgrade and I am looking at the VK EFI black motor. Has anyone done this conversion before? I did a search but no results.

Pics to follow once I start a build thread.

    Ash

If its already got a Holden 6 in it, then it should be straight forward. Be aware that the black 6 is not the greatest engine Holden ever made, it has a few quirks. Be careful with the crank angle sensor at the back of the head. They are easy to break when removing the head, box or engine, the timing is basically fixed in these engines - the dizzy is all but empty, only a rotor arm to distribute the spark.

Personally I think the Blue motor was slightly better, but you still end up with a carby that way....

Black motors come in two versions, the EST carby version has the empty distributor and the EFI version runs a stock mech/vac distributor to do the timing, much like a D1/RRC.

Cheers fellas, yeh I have been reading up a fair bit on the black motor to mixed reviews. I am in no rush as this will not be my daily driver.

I did have a black efi engine but have since sold it to the carpenter that was working on my house ( I had to pay him something ).

This was after JC had warned me off doing a conversion with one of these motors, he told me there was a danger of detonation under some conditions when the engine becomes worn.
