I am looking at upgrading the brakes on a SWB Series three and i have a LWB wreck that has 11 inch x 3 inch brakes on it that i may use. It was a six cylinder but it may have had a break upgrade as i thought only the V8's had the 3 inch shoes. Would i be over-breaking the vehicle or is this a reasonable conversion?
Has anyone done this conversion and had any issues or was it a success?
Cheers, Mick.

Late Series 3 all models 109 went to 3" brakes. This is a good upgrade for a swb, but you will need to use the lwb master cylinder.

I have a SIII shorty that has LWB brakes & a servo fitted.
I haven't used it in anger yet but the previous owner claimed it improved braking significantly.

I already have a servo fitted, but just have standard ten inch SWB brakes.
What size/width shoes do the LWB 6 cylinder trucks have on the rear?
Cheers, Mick.

I think they are the same size. difference is the fronts have 2 wheel cylinders per side, rears only have the 1
Hello from Brisbane.
The rear linings are narrower - 11" X 2" I think(?). My drums are off at the moment and I thought to measure them over the weekend, but figured someone else would have responded with the answer before this.
You are right that the fronts have 2 slave cylinders. The backing plates for the front drums are different between the earlier 4 and 6 cylinder set ups as are (obviously) the drums - to allow for the extra 0.5" of width they are slightly offset and the drum side profile has a square rather than tapered edge for the same reason.
Cheers,
Hello again.
11" X 2.5" rear - just measured one.
Funny how quickly you forget things.
Cheers,
Hi
I did my SWB years ago I think you move the front cylinders to the back cause they are bigger parts book comfirms this, also I had to change the master cylinder piping around. It came with a dual booster system from new and yes it stops better.
Cheers Will
