    GEARBOX/TRANSFER CASE OIL LEAK

    I decided to check the oil level in the gearbox today and noticed that it was a bit low. I ended up putting about half a litre of oil in the gearbox. I then decided to check the transfer case oil and I opened up the filler plug and at least half a litre of oil came gushing out. I'm guessing that there is a leak somewhere between the main gearbox and the transfer case. I have been topping up the gearbox oil every couple of months and hadn't bothered to check the transfer case. I had assumed that the gearbox leak was caused by something else and not a leak between the two.


    My question are-
    Short term is this leak going to be an issue. At the moment I don't drive the truck very far and mainly just around town with the occasional trip over 100km in distance.
    Secondly, long term to fix the problem, I suspect that I'm going to have to pull the gearbox/transfer case out or can this be done in situ? If I have to pull the whole lot out, I'm guessing that I may has well replace all the seals/bearings etc. Is this something that can be done at home or is it a specialist job?
    Appreciate any advice that I can get.

    its DIY, you dont have to pull much out to do it

    drop the propshafts, drop the linkages off the tcase (dont forget the park brake ones, I always do) unbolt the inspection port, remove the gear from in there and then unbolt the Tcase (it helps to drop the bottom plate)

    handle the tcase with gloves on and then just lift it back and off.

    takes a couple of hours.

    Dont forget to stick a block of wood under the bell housing and its cross member to suport the gearbox while the Tcase is off and to take the weight off the Tcase bu jacking the gearbox under the drain plug (I use a block of wood with a hole bored through it ontop of a piece of ply on a normal jack) while you undo the mounts.

    Many thanks for the tip Dave. What would have caused the oil running into the transfer case? Is there a seal or a gasket and if I keep an eye on it short term will there be any major issues with the leak?

    My 1990 Toyota Troopy did the same thing in the middle of outback Qld. Between seal gone. Oil spewing out TC breather. Gearbox almost empty, TC filled to the top.

    Quick fix was connect flexible pipe from TC fill hole to gearbox drain hole. Common problem because TC lower than gearbox. On other models the two are on same level so there is some opportunity for oil to flow back to gearbox.
