    Diff ratio

Hi all, does anybody know shot diff ratio is in a series 3 Landy LWB? I got under and had a quick look, not sure if I was looking at a casting # on the housing! it read 004.170 or is this the diff ratio? Mine has a holden 186 it's revving at approx 3800 at 100km. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Eddie.

You have stock diffs in that case (maybe 4.77).
Either upgrade to 3.54's from a rangey, (will give an inaccurate speedo, read slow) (maybe disco diffs too, others will know for sure), high speed transfer case conversion, an overdrive, or 7.50x16 tyres, (but speedo to revs won't change on the gauges, however grond speed will be greater).

All Series 3 (except Stage 1) came with 4.7:1 diffs. Stage 1 was 3.54, same as Range Rover Classic, Discovery 1& 2, 90, 110, and Defender. All of which are interchangeable with your front diff (except D2 and late D1 and late RRC I think, which have 24 spline instead of ten spline side gears. Your rear diff is more of a problem, as the salisbury diff is not readily changed by just swapping the centre. The only relatively easy swap is a Stage 1 complete axle, but these are unfortunately fairly rare.

Perhaps the best solution is to either fit an overdrive or oversize tyres to get higher effective gearing.

(Other ratios are available, but it is very unlikely that they are fitted to your series 3. To check for certain, jack up one rear wheel (chock the other one) and count the number of turns the prop shaft makes for one turn of the wheel, then divide by two)
