    Petrol fumes smell in car

Hi all, I have a series 3 LWB 109 SW with 2 petrol tanks, front and rear. When I run the front tank I have a strong smell of petrol coming into the car when I fill it full. Smell becomes some what less as fuel level goes down in use. Is there some type of breather mechanism that's needed? My cap as a sealed type with no type of breathing apparatus attached to it. The tank is filled on inside of the car beneath the drivers seat. The tank has been repaired with no apparent leaks that I can see.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks. Eddie.

The filler connects to the tank via a hose that is inside the vehicle. Likely leaks are at either end of this or the hose itself.

Also, leaks round the fuel pickup or the sender, both on top of the tank, are likely to be smelled inside.

As far as I know all Series have a vented fuel cap, and in the front tank of Series 2/3 there is a separate vent hose from the top of the tank to just below the filler. This is also a potential source of leaks.

(Some of the above may not apply if the front tank is a non-standard addition)

John, are you serious when you say that the cap is supposed to be vented? I used a filler assembly on my camper trailer and the fuel pump sucked a vacuum on the tank strong enough I couldn't get the fuel cap off

It is possible there are some that are unvented, but I have never seen one. It is perhaps more likely that a cap has a vent that is blocked or stuck.

My 1976 series 3 had a sealed fuel cap as it had a carbon filter on it as a form of pollution control. I found out the hard way when I put a perkins diesel in it, the fuel pump sucked the sides of the tank in and fractured when the strengthening folds were. Solved the problem by drilling a small hole in the cap.It also had a one way shuttle valve on the line which I think went back to the tank. Make sure and watch when you fill right up that expansion of the fuel does not force the fumes out as well.

    Hello Lindsay,

What sort of Perkins Diesel did you fit into your 1976 Series 3? Did it require much modifications to the chassis and cross-members? Did it have better performance than the 2.25 litre Land Rover diesel?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
