While on the topic of S3 Chassis

Anyone know whether S3 chassis were painted matt, satin or gloss? Need to source paint. It's been a long time since 1977 and my memory is not that good. I had it "Rust proofed" shortly after buying it also, so I didn't see the original colour for that long and it's been galv colour now for a few decades.

I want it back to more original if I'm going to get around to putting it all back together.

    Cheers again

    They were a satin black.

When purchasing chassis paint, go for enamel which will paint over anything without problem. Acryllic like many of the chassis paint from places like Supercheap will blister and react with enamels.

When I purchased my Defender "Ikea", the chassis had been blasted, primed in red ferricoxide and overcoated with chassis black. Unfortunately it was acryllic and was peeling off in patches so I had a red/black appaloosa pattern chassis. Eventually had to have the chassis chemically dipped to get rid of the acryllic at the cost of over a $1K.

Remember if you have a gal chassis you'll need to clean off any oxidisation with a high pressure washer, then apply an etch primer before the finish coat.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Thanks, and yeah, been there done that! Previously painted it in a product called (I think) Isotrol. Recommended as the ducks nuts industrial coating for extreme environments and perfect on galv. I have been gradually stripping it off as it fell off in large chunks. Fortunately where it remains it flakes off with a scraper fairly easily. Could have been my prep but I did follow instructions at the time.

    Thanks again

    Cheers
