    Batty Lives!!!

    Attachment 82467Hello All,

After overcoming what was a self-created electrical problem that meant I could not start the motor I had a success today.

I got Batty to run for more time than a flooding carburettor allows. I swapped over carburettors and without the electrical issue I had Batty ticking over. Well it turns out the swapped over carburettor has a different set of issues, such as it will only keep the motor running with the foot on the accelerator pedal close to the floor, or with the choke wide open.

This also allowed me to notice that I need to spend some time on the distributor, points, spark leads and spark plugs. Oh the need to make some wee adjustments to the timing too. Oh and that I have to again recharge my long suffering battery that has had a hard life due to my own ignorance. This is in reference to the self-created electrical problem I mentioned earlier

The most important thing is that I now know that the engine runs - for the first time that only the previous owner knows when. It was put away for a while, "but the engine was running when it was parked" "It only needs a new plug in the bottom of the fuel tank to run though."

    Anyway, Batty Lives

I have a third, however totally unknown, carburettor that I will try to see if it is an improvement on the last two tried. Hopefully the third time will be the charm and the resurrection of Batty will be a lot smoother and more prolonged. Cross fingers for tomorrow. Who knows I might even be able to get the engine running to such an extent that I can find out if the clutch and gear box works and if Batty can move under his own locomotion!

    Kind Regards

    A wee While Later ...

    Hello All,

Having given Batty a rest I tried to start the engine again. There was just enough charge left in the battery and the engine kicked over. With a better technique on the accelerator pedal I kept the engine going for longer. However, as soon as my foot eased off the accelerator the engine spluttered.

I happened to glance over to the floor tunnel and spotted the hand throttle and I went, "hmmm I wonder if that is still connected?" While keeping the engine going with the foot accelerator I tired the hand throttle and it worked! I slowly balanced the two until I could take my foot off the accelerator and let the hand throttle control the motor at the right amount of revs. I could then get out of the cab and check to see how the engine was going.

The two photographs are actually action ones. Take a look at the constant white bit just near the radiator - it actually shows that the fan is turning around Oh they were meant to be videos however I obviously have to learn about that aspect of the camera

    Kind Regards

    Batty Moves!!!

    Hello All,

I did not swap over the carburettors like I was going to this morning. I thought I would try to see how easy Batty was to start first. I did put my foot down on the accelerator pedal to start with however it soon became clear that this was unnecessary . I have since started Batty just by turning the key with no contact needed with the accelerator.

I then put Batty into gear and ... he moved forward!!!

I got out of the cab and opened the gate. Meanwhile Batty was still ticking over. Then I went for a drive around the paddock and was able to select all the forward gears.

I drove Batty back into the house yard and positioned him ready to reverse back into his spot. Well I either have to shorten the gear stick, cut a hole into the dash board or learn how to adjust the travel in the gear selectors. Still I reckon being able to start the engine and being able to get Batty to move under its own power is just wonderful.

Engine wise I will be doing a compression test and see if the grey smoke is due to worn rings. I had hoped that once the engine had been running for the first couple of times it might have gone away. I do not know the last time Batty was operational; however, I think the grey smoke is a constant. As the engine revolutions increase so too does the volume of the smoke.

A good thing is that Batty can idle without having the hand throttle engaged or pressing down on the accelerator pedal Shame about the smoke though!

Still when you consider that I bought Batty for less than just the value of the pioneer tool brackets and the rear scoop. I reckon I am still way out in front

I have a link to Batty running and it also shows the smoke [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY4uBvPEDNg&feature=youtu.be[/ame] My apologies for the poor start of the video clip. It is the first time I have taken a video clip and the first time I posted up on YouTube. I have to learn about video editing too - the start is not what I would like it to be.

Here is a closer view of the tail pipe and the smoke [ame]http://youtu.be/ZQLemuUm3wE[/ame]

I could not take a video of my first drive of Batty because I did not have my camera with me.

I have attached some photographs of the position of the gear stick in Reverse, First and Third. Yes Reverse goes right up against the dash board while 1st and 3rd are the thickness of an A4 piece of paper between the gear stick knob and the dash board. I would like to be able to upgrade from the current version of a reverse gear that is shown in the last photograph

It also feels like a prairie gearbox - because of the wide open spaces between the gear positions -"home, home on the range, where the deer and the antelope play... "

Can someone please provide some instructions about how I could readjust the positioning of the gear stick selections?

Apart from rings what other things might cause the grey smoke - too rich a fuel mixture ...?

    Thank you

    Kind Regards

    Hi Lionel
    Well done getting Batty going!
Can't help with the gear shift other than checking that the gear lever isn't bent
Grey smoke could be super rich mixture or valve stem seal. Compression test will tell you the state of the rings though
Make sure you check the comp with all plugs out and full throttle.
Check dry and then with a squirt of oil through the plug hole.
If the second reading is higher suspect the rings
Make sure you write the readings down so that you can determine which pot is suspect if at all
    Good luck and enjoy!

    Earning its Keep

    Hello All,

After sorting out its starter motor issues Batty is up and about earning its keep. Okay being piled up with branches and transporting them through the paddock to the place they are going to be burnt might not be up there with hauling trailers.

However, Batty is now associated by SWMBO as something that is "useful".

I really must do something about the brakes though Stopping when I want it to would be nice.

    Kind Regards

    Lionel,
    Regarding the gearstck 'problem'....

There is nothing you can adjust so probably wear on the gearstick (the ball it pivots on and/or the ball that engages with the selector rods).

There are also different gearsticks for 4-cyl & 6-cyl so possibly the wrong gearstick ?

Some gearsticks have a nylon bush on the bottom that fails Land Rover FAQ - Repair & Maintenance - Series - Drivetrain - SIII Shift Lever Nylon Bushing Failure Repair

    G'day Colin,

    Thank you for the tips.

I am negligent in not writing that the gear stick issue was sorted out.

Last year I went for a scavenge amongst my parts vehicles and swapped over the gear stick. It turns out that the one Batty came with had signs of a welded repair. The repairer might not have gotten the alignment straight.

Now that the starter motor is sorted out I can drive Batty into the shed and put it on axle stands and get to the brake wheel cylinders.

The passenger side rear brake drum was off Batty when I bought it from the previous owner. I noticed that the seals were perished and there was crud everywhere.

I will see how well honing works and put a kit through them. Hopefully they were only leaking and not corroded solid???

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
