    1975 Diesel Fuel Sender

I spent a silly amount of time yesterday struggling to get the seat base off mainly due to the seatbelt floor anchor bolts putting up a struggle. Ground them off eventually.

The workshop and Haynes books don't mention having to remove the seat base to access the fuel sender. I'm thinking of re-engineering the seat base so I can access it easily in the future and was wondering if anyone else had done this and if so how did you go about it. I was thinking of cutting a piece out and then replacing with a larger piece hinged. I'd still have to remove the runner but at least not the whole seat base.
    cheers,

    front right seat, right??

    Hello D,
That sounds like an interesting problem. I had my seat frame out a few months ago do do a wash & blow-dry on my gearbox, and I can understand why you really don't want to remove the seat frame very often!!. I think it would take me over a day to get it out and in again, for such a simple job.

I just went and had a look at Tallulah. She is a diesel 10-seater, so the aux tank is under the driver's seat and our tanks may not be quite the same. Nevertheless, it's only 3 bolts at the front and 3 bolts at the rear, and the whole tank should drop neatly downwards. You don't need to take it out; it should give you enough access room at the top (if your tank is the same as mine).

Would this approach work with your setup? do let me know.

    Cheers, Cerise.

I just found Gromit's photo of a tank: If yours is like this ,it may well drop down quite easily. Cheers, C.

    Thanks Gents.

The top of the sender is mostly hidden underneath the seat "runner" and seat base. I cant access it unless I take the seat base out and I don't want to do that again in a hurry! I don't need to drop the tank - not yet anyway. I just want access to the sender. I don't like cutting more holes than necessary - there's enough already, but whiles its off I thought a good idea to have a think about it.
    cheers,

All the tanks I've got have the sender closer to the centre of the vehicle so they are not under the edge of the seatbox.

Is it a LH tank fitted on the RHS ? Otherwise it seems odd to make the sender inaccessible.

ahh! that's interesting. Being a l/h tank in a r/h drive may be the reason. Typically me that I have the weirdo difficult one! I'll do a bit of digging and see what comes up.

well , I cleaned the top of the tank up and it looks as though the sender was moved. Looking at Colin's Pic , the position it was moved from doesn't look right either. First day on the job do you think or some other reason? I'm tempted to look for a replacement tank rather than hack at the seat base. I have an inkling I may have a small leak in any case. Now for the handbrake!
    cheers,
