Ok, so how do I post multiple pics on the one post? As soon as I upload a new one it seems to delete the previous one. I doing this on my ipad
Hi folks. I've been reading a few of the stories about others rebuilding/ restoring their vehicles and have found them most interesting. So I thought I'd do the same with the restoration of my 1978 series 3 station wagon. I picked up the Caron eBay for the princely sum of $800 which I thought was reasonable. The engine runs and the chassis is galvanised so I figured I was ahead already. I freely admit to having no real mechanical knowledge or metal fabrication ability. I see some of the stuff others are able to do in their workshop and I am amazed. The aim of this project is to teach myself some of these skills (with your help and advice) and have some fun with my two sons on an iconic vehicle.
I am planning to strip it back to the chassis and then start to put it all back into one piece, hopefully a running piece. Already I am loving the fact that these cars are really just giant Meccano sets. Step one is to remove the tropical roof, simple job of undoing the 20 or so bolts that hold it together. Simple until you realise the windows leak and the channel holding the nuts has been full of water and so half the nuts are rusted on. I managed to shear a few bolts but only needed the grinder on one nut that had all but disappeared.
Initial assessment is that the door tops will need replacing and the 2nd row doors and rear door also have rust. Whether this is repairable will be revealed once I start pulling them apart. Bulkhead seems ok apart from the drivers side footwell, will need a new door post welded in there.
I have attached a few photos of progress thus far. My plan is to document my journey and my learning as I go. Hopefully you find it interesting as well.

Roof coming off
Always wanted a convertible
That was a good buy for the money, well done
I was tempted to buy it just for the chassis and the deluxe bonnet, but I'm pleased it will be put back on the road instead. Good luck with it.
Looks like a great base to start with. Someone must have done a previous resto if it has a galvanised chassis.
I have the same problem uploading pics on my ipad - can only do one at a time. On a PC, you can do multiple pics per post.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
Apparently the owner before the previous owner (is that the PPO?) used it on the beach and launched a boat with it. I'm guessing he did some resto on it to save the chassis. I can see evidence here and there of other work having been done on it.
The dog looks very happy with your purchase.
Cheers, Mick.

Today I took off the side panels, rear door and the second row doors. What should be a simple task is made difficult with rusted bolts. When I removed the door cards from the 2nd row doors I found the steel frame completely rusted out. So, I'm either going to need new door frames or I'm going to have to try and replace pretty much all of the framing on the current doors. Any tips/ideas?
I was thinking that the profile of the frame is very similar to the top hat roof batten material. Could I make a new frame from that? Or am I just being ridiculous?
The photo shows the frame under the window rust as well as the side frame. The bottom is completely gone.
This one shows the same door at the latch end.
