Sorry for the overload here but I just found this picture which shows it off really well. It might be of help to someone looking for a colour.
Sorry about the angle of the 88, but my technical department has just gone to bed...school tomorrow!!!
Hi,
What running in oil have series owners used.
I see Penrite and Castrol make them.
Also are the head bolts torqued up wet or dry ( oil )
Manual suggests a thin smear of clean engine oil on the block and head face , before fitting the head gasket.
This the norm today ????
Thanks

The repair manual says
"If a non-retorque fabric type cylinder head gasket is being used it must be fitted dry, without grease or any sealing compound."
"If a copper-asbestos type gasket is being fitted, thinly coat both sides of the gasket with Hylomar PL 32/M jointing compound."
There is no mention or torqueing the heads wet.
Standard mineral oil with an oil change at 500 miles.
Diesel engine cylinder head bolts -
5/16 in.UNF 18 LB FT Torque setting (2,4 kgf.m.)
1/2 in UNF 90 lb ft torque setting (12,5 kgf.m.)
Thanks spudfan.

Always lube the bolt threads and contact faces under bolt head to prevent friction giving u an incorrect torque value on the bolt. Just a little oil goes a loooong way.

Hi,
Small step backwards.
Head bolts cleaned and tops painted. Someone had over done silver anti seize !!!!
Wound a bolt down all block threads, but one, no 17 in torque sequence, ( Front, rocker gear, head bolt ) still had 5 or so threads showing.
On with a socket, and it was slowly wound down.
When I took the bolt out the end 3 or 4 threads were damaged ????
I got a small torch and looked down the head bolt hole.
The top, long , centre water pump bolt had come through.
When I had pulled the water pump off, I had made careful note of the lengths and positions.
Even though on standard bore, No 1 cylinder was distorted at the top, on that cylinder bolt side. This being noted by the reboring shop.
This must have been the problem, even though neither bolts were damaged. May have been like that from new ????
I cut 1/4 inch from the end of water pump bolt, ( now 3 1/2 inches long )Then ran a die down it to clean up the threads, the same for the head bolt, also running a tap down the cylinder bolt hole to tidy it up.
Just something to check when rebuilding a 2 1/4 petrol motor.
