Large brown is probably power in from the solenoid, or generator to the ammeter.

Make sure you replace it with cable of the same, or greater number of wire strands - someone did the reverse on my Alpine and guess who had a wiring meltdown :(

Interesting you say that, as I do have a melted wire, but white, not brown.
The wiring is starting to make a bit of sense.
I hate it when there is a miss match of wires.
I am off to the wreaking yard to get an old wiring loom, so things can be
put back to the correct colouring.

If you have the dosh, this crowd sell all of the right colours in different gauges for very reasonable prices Cable : PVC, Autosparks, World leading supplier of classic car wiring looms

It does take a while for it to arrive here, but I have used them several times and been very happy with the products. A great resource for headlight wiring upgrades :D

I have had time to look at the wiring diagram this morning and the brown wires are the main power in from the alternator, via the starter solenoid and ignition switch, so it carries a rather heavy current.

Find out what cable your car should have; count the number of strands and measure the diameter of one of them; and then check with the table to see if it is the size Lucas supplied - remember that some dodgy operator might have used lighter cable, as happened to my car! Select the same size if you trust Lucas, or better still get the next larger size. If you find some at the wreckers remember to count the strands,

Had a good look for the reverse light switch.
Looked all over Gilberts gearbox, but could see now wires for a switch anywhere.
So, where should the switch be ???? Maybe it has been removed, or one not fitted ????
A location Pic would be great.

Series reverse light switches are on the bracket that hold the base of the gearlever. They were optional, but fitted to all Austtralian ones when required by ADRs some time in the mid seventies.

I'm not sure - it was right about then that they became compulsory. You probably need to go through the ADRs to find out for sure. And if they say you don't need it, I would be inclined to fit a reversing light anyway.
