Ser 3 88 brake shoe question

    1978 88
I purchased this from a mechanic workshop that was selling to recover costs. Old age owner that drove it a short distance and had lost drivers licence.

    single system non boosted brakes.

The tail was that the shoes had been driven metal to metal. The shoes replaced and drums machined. wheel cyl and hoses . It wouldn't stop in a straight line. . I was then discovered it needed over sized shoes to match drums.

I driven 2000 KM and have adjusted the drum twice. I need 2 pedal pumps to get hard pedal-then it will 4 wheel lock up. I ran out of rear adjustment.

the rear shoe has a spring attached on the lower end but no spring on the wheel cyl end.
the spring from the front shoe is attached to stud attached to the back plate.

am I missing a spring or retainer.

    Hi Dave,
Two things, first chase up some good second hand drums,
or Talk to a local brake place, to see if the thicker brake pads are available, to glue or rivet onto the old shoes.
Make sure you bleed them properly, mine took quite a few goes to get all the air out.
    My 77 88 was a simular story.
Mine has a Holden 186 conversion.
Sat at my local mechanic shed. None runner, no brakes.
$300 later home. Brake done with a couple of new cylinders. New brake lines and a good clean, then bled.
The rears were new ones, with new brake shoes all round.
Motor running well now, but will need looking at.

Mine looks a bit rougher than yours.

    In red.

There is no top spring to the trailing shoe on 10" brakes.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Wonder why no spring ????
I had problems with mine binding up in reverse.
Problem 1, brakes had been reassemble wrong and missing, second small ( 1/4 ? ) bolts
I also added a little chamfer to the trailing shoe top edge.
Plus the new shoes need time to bed in.
That what I did, Back Bled them, in the end. I think this I a good way if only one person to bleed.

I found picture of back plate on line and can see the retainer plate in I my photo. I just found it odd that the shoe fell away when the drum was removed. I may check the lower mounting and replace the springs.

nothing to stop the shoe grab in reverse. normally chamfer the top or slot the shoes..

Pattern drums are cheap in the UK but shipping is expensive due to the weight, mind you they're probably the same drums as you'll buy here.

Try a local brake shop, they can sometimes source them at a reasonable price and they won't be Britpart/Bearmach.
Shoes are available from brake shops and the lining material is a better quality than some of the LR aftermarket shoes.

Ordered full set of Brembo drums. look sexy on the net.
the brake specialist we use at work was checking for the best linings to suit. and will supply with shoes. rough dollars $500. depending on local freight. These are instock so im guessing someone has used these before.

It already has new wheel cyl etc.

the EBAY gent was in Kempsey, found the add tonight. and the drums are around the same price as kotara.

Full set of shoes springs and drums fitted today.

Now pedal is random at times it stops and the shoes are holding on. Ive got a grinding noise when the pedal is applied in the rear im thinking[not tested] that it could be the rear wheel cyl sticking.

Brake supplier has told me that the front and rear are the same.
the only thing that looks crook now is the rear wheel cyl.

    Question.
Work shop manual shoes no spring internally in rear wheel cyl ?

The front shoes had spring between both shoes[top/bottom].

IS the retainer plate mounted to the rear shoe on front and rear axles ? it had a mixture of fixtures and a mixture of bolts. new shoes came with 6 mm bolts. The parts and workshop manuals shows a variety.

the old linings have more material that the new shoes.
