    Oil

    Hi,
    what oil, would members recommend for a newly rebuild 2 1/4 petrol motor.
    Northern NSW climate.

    pretty much any 10 or 15/40wt will do

    Isn't RX Super a HD diesel oil ?

    Everyone will have their own opinion about oils.

    I'm using 20w/50 designed for older engines in all my old Land Rovers. Either Big W or Kmart (can't remember which) have Shell 20W/50 for older engines at $20 for 5 litres at the moment. Have used this in the Series I for some years.

    Any oil you can buy today will be superior to the best oil you could buy when this engine was designed, and there is little if any benefit in using a better oil - provided you stick with the prescribed service intervals. The improvements in modern oils are pretty much wasted on this engine, and I doubt if they allow you to extend service intervals safely either - these engines do not have the close tolerances of modern engines, nor do they have the close control of fuel mixture that allows these extended intervals in modern engines, and it is doubtful if the air coming in is as clean as with modern paper filters either.

    The only important points are to use the correct grade - 10-50W or, in that area, 15-50W or even 20-50W. The high level of detergent in diesel oils such RX Super won't help, but, if the engine overhaul did not include cleaning all old deposits in the engine, may actually hurt by mobilising these deposits and possibly blocking oilways with disastrous results. It has happened.

    Thanks for the replies.
    The block will be fully cleaned.
    New big end and main bearings.
    Oil pump will be checked for wear and clearances.
    What is idea for a good oil pump ????
    Head will be fully done up.
    Do I need to run the heavier oil in a fully rebuilt motor, or stick to a good 15/40 oil.
    Last full rebuild project was a Ferguson 1954 TED20.
    The 2 1/4 Landrover motor just looks like a upgrade Vangard motor, in a lot of ways
    I run 15/40 in it, but none restored, or partial restored Fergy owners are running the thicker 20/60 oils.

    Older engines need a thicker oil to tale up the tolerances


    A rebuild engine should run up nicely on 5/30

    On a rebuild properly cleaned engine the thinest highest detergent oil you can run and maintain oil pressure on is the right one.

    Make your first oil change very short to clear out the assembly lube
