original or after market indicator switches?

    Hi guys,
my indicator ,horn switch failed last night and was cutting out the driving lights. High beam worked fine (sorry to everyone on the Calder FWY ast night).
The switch was/is flogged out and sloppy when I got the landy so I knew it was coming.
My question is this, which is the better unit, the original lucas or an after market? Anyone had both? If the aftermarket is just as good why pay extra?
    Cheers lads

I went after market and have had no issues. From memory , the bracket that holds the stalk to the steering wheel shaft didn't come with it - so don't throw the old one away! It might be that it shouldn't have come with it and its something that needs to be ordered separately, I don't know.
    cheers,

The question is.....do Lucas actually make it themselves or buy it in ?

Wouldn't have thought that the volume of sales would justify them making it. If someone has a 'Lucas' one it would be interesting comparing with an aftermarket one.

My new one came in a Lucas box but who knows who made it.I tend to go for the the genuine parts but some seem come from around the world somewhere.
So I guess it's hit & miss. The indicator switch seems so far so good.

    Thanks for the feedback,
I've looked at the one that is on there and there is no identifying marks to say it is lucas or not. Pot luck hey

    Relays

    Hi,

Possibly more important than the quality of the switch for reliability is whether or not your truck has been modified to run the headlights through a quality relay direct off the battery or it still has the factory arrangement of running all the current through the switch.

Relayed properly, the light switches will usually last for years. They are pretty flimsy anyway but, Lucas or not, they don't like handling the current of the full lamp circuit.

    Cheers,

Best to run through a relay , stops the switch over heating which is usually what causes the switch to fail.
