Recent replies seem to suggest that taking a deep breath and buying a new loom is the answer. Different if you're only doing one or two wires of course.

I found this somewhere when I was looking to replace a few wires rather than the whole loom.

Aproximately equivelent wire sizes and capacities:

    British standard
    U.S. standard
    AMP carrying
    capacity
    General
    uses

    14 strand
    18 gauge
    8 amps
tail & side lamps. general instrument wiring
    28 strand
    14 gauge
    17 amps
    Headlamps, horns, Aux lighting
    44 strand
    12 guage
    25.5 amps
Generator to Control box & Ammeter
    65 strand
    10 guage
    35 Amps
30 AMP alternator feed & ammeter

    cheers,

I'm rewiring my sII 109 and am using 4mm wire throughout. New light assemblies I have brought have only about 2.5mm wires, so for me 4mm is a bit of over kill. Better to have more capacity than just enough me thinks.

Various sizes would be required - I'd get some 1.5, 2.5 and 4mm for the lights, although 2.5 would be ok for that. You'll also need a small run of something heavier to run from the alternator to the battery - 10 or even 16mm if you want to get carried away.

When I rewire my series 3, I'll be redoing the entire loom, but updating it with some fancy new fangled technology for **** and giggles - full CAN bus between the dash and the engine bay, so only 1 wire running through the firewall controlling all lights, indicators, ignition, cranking and brakes - but that's just me...
