    Power steering

Has anyone actually tried installing power steering into the good old s3? If so can you please lead me in the right direction with tips and even parts you used to install it. I have the 6cylinder 2.6 version. Cheers Jordan

Hi Jordan, yes indeed there are people here with power steering on their series land rovers. One of the members here - Banjo - has done a very good step by step of how he did his.

To put a proper PS box in means modification to the chassis and a new steering column, and will, in all states require Engineering of some description, so once you've got a plan of attack, it may pay to chat to an Engineer first to see if they are happy with what you plan.

Here's a thread on all the previous questions asked on the subject - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-iii...version-3.html

I may merge your thread with this one as it covers the same subject.

    Cheers - Gav.

One of the easiest ways to do the conversion is to get a 110 or Defender steering column and the relay shaft and then connect that to a P38a steering box, which you mount on the outside of the chassis. This requires far less chassis modification. You can also use a Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan GQ/MQ box that mounts in a similar place (make sure you get one that turns the correct way).

You then need to get a modified drag link that will connect to the pitman arm on the PAS box and the lever on your LH swivel housing.

There are a number of Rover 6cyl crank pulleys that can carry multiple belts, then you only need to make up the bracket to support an appropriate pump and reservoir.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Anyone tried one of the modern electric power steering systems? There's a bloke in Qld doing them for MGBs and similar so the technology is available here in Oz.

I have a full electric kit sitting in the shed out of something - I've been looking at fitting it to the 101 but the steering box just won't cut it in that application, but it would be interesting to see if it would fit in a series. There isn't a huge amount of room on a series steering shaft, but I might have a peak next time I'm in the shed.
