My little 88 had been running really well. On day when sitting in traffic on a hot day I noticed that she was idling too fast (guessing 900 - 1000 revs). I adjusted the idle back to about 650 or 750. Vehicle was fine after this.
About a week later she wouldn't idle at all. cough, splutter and miss and then stall. With the revs up and whilst driving fine she was fine , but as soon as I put the clutch in (or 2 seconds after) she would stall...
I suspected carburettor (given the earlier issue), but after reading one too many forum posts here I started with the basics. Plugs, leads, coil, points, fuel lines, filter, fuel pump, bowl etc etc etc, but everything seems in line with my manual.
Hmmmm. Maybe it is the carb. But to be honest I don't really want to re-build the carb as I am way too much of a newbie and I can just imagine myself making a meal of it.
Quick call to my dad (an old bushy/farmer who has spent more than his fair share of time keeping old farm machinery running) and after talking through the problem he reckons I have probably dislodged some crap in the carb when I was playing with the idle (or just got unlucky).
His suggested solution. Pull the air cleaner off the top of the carb, get the engine revs right up and then whack a piece of carboard over the inlet, repeat half a dozen times.
Jackpot - whatever is stuck is now dislodged and she is idling as sweet as ever...
I know it was bad, I know it was wrong, I know that it will have plenty of you shaking your head, but thought I would post in case anyone else is in a tight spot... Flame away.

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Yup, me too, but i used my hand, coz im a mechanic...self taught and Dad had something to do with it too. As u said its an old bushies trick. But its not a permanent fix so get ready to clean out the carby, shouldnt need overhauling. And replace the fuel filter too.😆
Cheers Rod

If you think thats bad I'm probably not going to tell you some of the hijinks us pro mechanics get up to when the owners arent around....
the saying, "if it wont go hit it with a bigger hammer, if it breaks it needed replacing anyway" is missing the words "tell the customer" I'll let you guess where they need to be placed

I recall pushing a VW backwards in 4th gear to clean out the mainjet.
It worked
