G'day Lockmaker,
Could you please post up the engine and gear box serial numbers?
It will help identifying which model they came from originally.
Kind Regards
Lionel
Hello all,
Have just bought 1973 SWB thought it was all original but begining to think engine and gearbox may be from earlier vehicle
Gear lever has double bend same as S2 etc. and although the carburettor is zenith 316 it has adaptor plates under it and intake manifold is at 90 degrees which seem to have read somewhere was for a solex?
Gear lever caught our attention when we started hitting knuckles on Dashboard when selecting reverse seems throw too long or wrong lever.
So maybe it's an S2 engine and box?
Any advice on best way to tell what's what?
Does this matter or are there parts that we will need to check carefully ?
Thanks very much

Chassis number 90302915A *the plate inside the engine near the bonnet latch
Body number is LRS 17067

I'm not sure how to find the gearbox number though
Engine number seems to be Series III 3-bearing

Really appreciate the help, haven't got to the gearbox number yet as we've been busy cleaning the carb up and stopping all the black smoke.
Interesting the action on the gearbox matches the description of the throw to reverse in the reference posts.
What gear lever should be in a S3? should it be double bend like S2?
Thanks again
Richard
Series 3 gearlever has single bend, and is likely to be a bitclose to the dash on a Series 2/2a. But another potential issue is - most Series gear levers have been broken at the ball and rewelded there. This may not have been done accurately.
You can tell if it is a Series 3 box - if the clutch slave cylinder is on the left, it is Series 3, if on the right, Series 2/2a.

Thanks for the help, looks like we have a series 2 lever (double bend) on a series 3 box, in our series 3 landy
Would putting a series 3 lever back on stop us hitting our hands on the ashtray / dash top?
Cheers
Richard
Here is a pic of my series 3 swb and the stick is in reverse gear.
Plenty of clearance from the dash.
Alternatively you could just apply a bit of heat to one you have and reshape it to suit.
PS The car was on it's roof at the time I took this pic as I was servicing the brakes!
Cheers, Mick.
