    Front Propshaft - continued

OK let me ask it this way - Does anyone know how long the front propshaft on a S3 is supposed to be?
I have pulled two seperate ones - mine (too short) is 590 mm when compressed.
It is now too short with parabolic springs.
Another propshaft out of a seemingly identical S3 is 705 mm when compressed. It is too long.
That is a huge variation 115 MM's. What gives?
They both extend about 25 to 30 mm.
My only solution is looking to be having my shaft extended - the missus perked up when I mentioned it.

    Six?

    Hello from Brisbane.

No doubt the experts will give you an accurate answer but I was wondering if the longer prop shaft might have come from a six cylinder truck? I believe the gearbox is set further back requiring a longer front shaft and shorter rear shaft.

    Cheers,

Yep, different engines use different shafts. The 6 cylinder front shaft is longer as the gearbox sits further back. While I'll have my parabolics fitted shorty, I won't have a gearbox in for quite some time to assist with any measuring of things sorry. I'll go measure my 6 cylinder front shaft - my guess is it will be the 705mm one you have measured.

I'll let you know in 5....

Yep, close enough - 710mm for my front shaft from a factory 6.

I'll be getting new shafts made front and rear when everything's all bolted up so I'll go off what I measure.

    propshaft

Interesting and thanks for that. I didn't mention in this post, but I have a Holden conversion. I'm not sure if the gearbox would have been moved back to accomodate that.

I wouldn't have thought so - if it was a factory 6 originally, then you should already be running the longer shaft. If it was a 4 cylinder originally, then unless the firewall was modified, the engine just sits further forward - the nose of the water pump will be quite close to the radiator. In this case, the gearbox should still be where the factory it, but would use the shorter shaft.
