It probably has rust on the flywheel and pressure plate. Try loading the engine in fourth with the brakes applied. Don't get it too hot though.

Hey everyone
I notice that no one has posted on here for over a year so it's time to break the drought.
I have just taken delivery of a new S3 Station Wagon which had been sitting in a Farmers shed for years. Hence my problem he used to go out and start it regularly but didn't drive it. I think this has caused this problem. I can start it in gear and the clutch will disengage when I hit the break. Then you can drive it normally. Is there an easy way of fixing this without removing the gear box?

Ditto.
The truck on the farm used to do this when my late Dad was getting past using it. It would stand up unused in the shed for months. The trick was to roll start down the drive and then put it under load uphill in a high gear. With use it tended to self correct.
