No , other wise the lube will work its way up into the speedo head which will cause the speedo to give an incorrect reading . In saying that if you want to lube only lightly lube bottom 1/3 of the inner cable .
Rummaging around in the parts crate I found an old speedo cable with the plastic clip broken. I managed to get all of the square drive of the wire into the speedo drive so I can say that there is nothing in there broken off, cable or drive, that was left behind. It did feel as though there was a slight edge inside but a quick fiddle and the drive went in fine. Using the other end - I took the dash off and could get up past 10mph easily with a slight twiddle of the cable in the speedo. So I am assuming all is OK speedo end and drive end. In my picture - the flattened end of the cable was enough to make the speedo run. Should I lubricate the new speedo cable on arrival or will this already have been done? If I should, will sewing machine oil be the go? And how much is enough please?
cheers,

Finally got the new speedo cable and fitted it today. Went for a quick spin.Much better reading - hardly any flutter at all. However , having screwed the plate onto the drive housing noticed a gap - a couple of mil. Don't remember any gap when I took the thing off. I think , the round plate that offers up to the drive housing is slightly thicker and so doesn't sit in the recess. It's slightly proud. Should I be concerned - are they all like that nowadays , or am I being thick?
All help gratefully received as usual.

I wouldn't worry about it.
At the end of the day it is just a retaining plate that holds the cable outer in place, to locate the cable in the drive gear.
Cheers Mick.
