    Door locks.

This may be a stupid question but I can not manage to lock my passenger door (Series III 109" ute), I can lock it with the key but I can still open the door.

Is this a matter of the lock chamber being broken or is it more of the locking mechanism inside the latching and handle unit?

    All assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Nathan.

If you lock it with the small lever on the inside does it lock properly?

If it does then the internal mechanism is probably ok and the barrel may be the problem. It is most likely though that you have either worn internals or even a broken spring inside. It's not that hard to take them apart and clean and check them but you have to drill the rivet out and then pop rivet them back together afterwards.

I did some repairs on some of mine once and still ended up buying a complete new set from the UK as they still wouldn't stay locked . I think the dollar was a little better against the pound then though.

    Thanks for the reply.
The lock doesn't work when I lock the latch inside either.

Would a second hand do the job you think, I've got two new barrels ready to swap out? Or should I try to dismantle it and fix it? How long did yours last after you pulled it apart?

    Thanks again.

    Door locks

    Morning,

I've just fixed mine, a new lock plus postage from paddocks was getting on for 30 quid so i thought it worth a try. My SIII doesn't have a lock on the passenger side, just the internal twist lock. The lock works by pushing the pin on the inside of the manual lock in front of the door handle, preventing it from being lifted. Over time the handle gets a bit of wear on it and works as a nice ramp for the pin to ride over.

I stripped out the lock and removed the Z shaped bracket that holds the locking pin onto the handle assembly. You could seethe the Z bracket had about 2mm clearance over the lock handle body. In the vice and a bit of 'adjustment' with the 1lb light adjuster tool (Hammer) and i reduced the clearance to nil.

Screwed it all back together and bingo. Well not quite, had about 3 goes to get it just right.

    Failing that.... Paddocks!

    Cheers

    Ian

Thanks inch I think I may pull it apart and have a go of fixing it. Was the lock/handle you got the standard one or the anti burst for ?30?

    locks

Hi Bones, I managed to get away without buying a new lock, my Drivers door is anti burst with a keyed lock, the passenger door has just the internal manual twist lock, not sure if thats anti burst or not... Anyway, it was that one that i fixed, so if the key lock bit is causing the issues my fix won't work.

I think the lock works on the same principle, physically preventing the handle from moving, but in a different place.

    cheers Ian

Thanks inch. I have the other type of lock (a little lever that you slide up and down) it has a key lock on the outside aswell. I can turn the key to lock/unlock it and lock/unlock from the inside but I can still open the door by the handle. Hence not locking properly. I've tried swapping the lock barrels with brand new ones but alas no change. Therefore I believe it is internal.

Thanks for your assistance I haven't pulled it apart yet to have a look but it is on the books to do.

Before pulling it apart, just check you do not have the door adjusted so it is not quite closing properly, which can stop it locking. Twist the toggle that latches on the striker plate with the door open to make sure it still behaves the same.

The doors on my SIII LWB (1976) have two "closed" positions. THe first click is not completely closed, the second click is completely closed. If you operate the locks either by key or by internal lever, when the door is in the "first click" position, then the door will not lock, and you can still open it.
Maybe your door is not closing fully, try closing it slowly by pushing firmly on it. If you don't get the two "clicks" then it isn't fully closed.
    Cheers
