Best oil for a S3 suffix D box?

What oil do you use in your gearbox?
My S3 suffix D box syncros are a little notchy, don't know what oil is in there, probably whatever the army used. I have been maintaining the level with Castrol 75W90 hypoid.
I was impressed with the difference VMX80 made in the Defenders R380 when I changed it recently. Don't know what it was that came out, but it wasn't ATF.
Thinking of using it in the S3 box. Is that a good idea?

Here is a link to an AULRO thread about the subject.

EP 90 Gear Oil for Transmission Gearbox

When I fitted a Roamerdrive to my series 3 I followed the Globalroamer recommendations and changed to a GL4 75W-90 in the transfer case, and also the gearbox. I didn't notice any difference with gear changes etc. but it certainly knows how to find it's way out! I think it soaks through the alloy!

    Cheers, Mick.

    Thanks Mick,
Yes I noticed a new seep out of the R380 after the oil change. Probably will pour out of the S3.
I will have a read of that link.

Have been reading a bit about the art of choosing gearbox oil.
Seems we should not be using GL5 oil in synchro gearboxes?
The Castrol EPX oil I use is GL5, the VMX80 is GL4
I know the VMX80 transformed the gearshift in the R380, it now willingly changes down from 5th to 4th, reminds me of the Alfa Giulia I once owned.
I will change the S3 GB oil to VMX80 and see what happens.
Found a couple of interesting reads along the way:
