Not being able to find a scrapper gearbox to butcher i found these good American people, $10 for a locating tool! (Plus P and P mind you)

Can anyone confirm is this the right specs for a S3 clutch alignment tool?

    Pilot dia. inch: 0.75
    Pilot dia. Metric: 19.05
    Spline count: 10
    Spline decimal: 19.05
    Spline inch: 1"
    Spline metric: 25.4

Just got to have one in the tool box!

Happy new year to you all by the way. Cheers

    Ian

Series Land Rover is 7/8" (0.875") spigot and spline is 1 1/8" (1.125") external diameter, 10 spline.
If you know someone with a lathe it's easy to knock one up, even from a piece of wood will work.
You don't need the spline, just the inside diameter of the clutch plate.
Tool pictured below is .875" dia, then .920" dia which will fit neatly in the clutch plate centre.
First bit to fit in spigot bush is 3/4" inch long, then the piece that fits through the clutch plate is 1 1/2" long.
Disregard the other end and the drill holes, as it was just a scrap piece of bar I had laying around.

    G'day Mick,

    Happy New Year!

Since the Land Rovers I buy are lucky to have the full compliment of seats the thought of having an original tools kit included with the purchase simply beggars belief!

Can you please spare some time Mick and jot down the contents of an original tool kit? Thank you

Were the tools held in a canvas style tool roll or something similar?

Also, what does an original Series III jack from 1974-76 look like? Yep my vehicles have never been bought with one. It the jack a hydraulic or screw type? Were jacks stored behind the seat in ute style cabins. There are a couple of clips on the back wall that I am not sure what they are for.

Did the they come with crank handles for the engine as well?

Tim, my apologies for the thread hijack Have you started a new thread of your recent purchase and posted any photographs of it somewhere on AULRO yet? Is it a registered runner or a restoration project?

    Kind Regards
    Lionel

Jacks varied over the years, but my 1981 S3 came with all the original tools - including a hydraulic jack. It, the crank handle, and wheel spanner live behind the seats, with clips for the jack handle, wheel spanner and crank. The small tools are in a vinyl tool roll, usually in the tool box under the left or centre seat.

    Lionel,

If you are feeling flush and want a nice start to your tool collection, then Exmoor Trim have been selling canvas tool rolls for some little time now.

More than likely the originals will not have come with this particular piece of kit, but it suits the look.

    Cheers,

    Neil

I have a front shaft from an old gearbox that I use now but in the past I have quite successfully aligned clutches with a piece of wooden dowel that is the right size to go into the back of the engine (sandpaper it down if you need to) and then wrapped in insulation tape or cloth tape to be the right thickness for the clutch plate. Yes, things work best if they are absolutely perfectly aligned but it does still work with that sort of set up.

Used a bit sawn off a broom handle plus tape in the Simpson in 1966. It works.

Lionel, I found these pics on another Land Rover site.
It said they are from the Series 2 era.
I will add a pic of my 2A tool kit later.

    Cheers, Mick.

    Hello from Brisbane.

The tool roll in the left hand picture is a classic piece of UK period kit - King Dick spanners, Tecalemit grease guns etc. However, I would be a bit surprised if too many new Land Rovers sold in this country ever came so comprehensively equipped. All of the trucks we bought over the years only came, from memory, with a wheel brace, jack and crank handle.

    Cheers,

    Neil
