Thread: Handbrake Adjustment

Not quite -

1. Chock at least one front wheel (the hand brake stops holding the vehicle as soon as you raise one rear wheel). Check front wheel drive is disengaged.

2. Raise at least one rear wheel - not necessary to raise both.

3. Handbrake off.

4. Tighten adjuster till the handbrake locks, back off until the prop shaft can be rotated freely - should only be one click.

5. Apply handbrake, check it locks the raised wheel, release and check it still rotates freely.

If this procedure does not get a very effective brake with no drag when released, pull the drum off and inspect. Usually the problem is a eaking seal and a drum and linings covered with oil, but it is possible that a seized expander or other mechanical issues could exist. Linkage issues can exist as well, but with the drum off you can folow through on these - ones I have encountered include the bell crank coming off its pivot, and a broken end on a pull rod. (Both usually the result of excessive force trying to apply an oily brake!

Thanks John - what tool do you use for the square brake adjuster please? I have nothing in the box for this.

I use locking pliers. The square adjuster should not be hard to turn.

I use a 7mm spanner

The correct item is a "Girling brake adjusting spanner" - I've never seen one, nor have I ever known anyone who had one.

I use a 1/4" AF open end spanner if I can find it, otherwise a 7mm open end or occasionally a 4" shifter.

If you need anything more than these, you need to strip the adjuster and clean and grease it.

The square drive spanner that is available now to use on 1/4" and 5/16" square brake adjusters is:

Thanks everyone - i only go down to an 8mm spanner which is a no go - i have an 8mm socket but the only wrench i have is too large unless you use a reducer which then makes the thing too big for the space!
I'll take a look at the Draper.
