    Help please - Clutch problem

Quick question for all you experienced bush mechanics (I'm a very amateur DIY repairer) Clutch was playing up on my good, original condition, series 3 1973 standard SWB softtop LR. (It's a retired far west Queensland farm vehicle that gets use around my paddock, although i want to get it good enough to road register)

The take-up was very low on the pedal. Pumping the pedal seemed to help, so I bled the system, with a little success. Two months later (Very limited weekend use around the paddock) I took my foot off the clutch putting it back in the shed and nothing, no drive. There was no lurch or crunch or bump or noise or anything. I now have a gearbox with 4 neutrals. When its in gear and the clutch is off, there is no change in noise from the gearbox or bellhousing. I can shift through the gears without depressing the clutch.

I'm thinking I will start with replacing the slave then the master cylinder, and then move onto the friction plate and thrust bearing if it turns out to NOT be a hydraulic issue.

Anyone more experienced have any thoughts?

    Cheers, Ian.

You havent accidently knocked it into neutral in the transfer case? Red knobbed lever? If not, try putting it into 4wd, push yellow knobbed lever down, and see if you have drive. If u have drive then u may have a broken axle in the rear, usually the shorter one. If not, then u may have a major clutch breakage, very unusual, or the slave may be siezed in the released position. Im sure there are other causes and others will chip in with some more advice.

That's a point, I'll check it immediately. That'd be a bit embarrassing if it was in neutral. But I'd be happy at the easy fix. I'll let you know. Ian

    Thumbs up

It was in neutral. Back in business. It seems to be popping into neutral itself though, not every time, but every so often. That's maybe just worn. I'm pleased it was an easy fix though. Thanks, Ian

that is most likely a build up of gunk in the selector and detent mechansim not holding the range selection rod in place in the Tcase followed by excess play/bearing wear

if you start to get the clutch staying down but the MC and slave cylinder are not leaking that is usually the bearing carrier sticking on the slide OR the clutch fingers have worn into the throwout bearing.

The former can be fixed (temporarily) without major repairs by removing the tunnel cover, then the gear shift ball mounting plate, the access place under that thats on the bell housing and then very carefully and sparingly applying diff oil to the slide while tapping the bearing with a plasticish rod.
