    Bunyip rebuild

I was looking for a going registered Series 3 for several months when I saw this overpriced and very rusty example on eBay. I needed something to take my mind off work and challenge me a bit so with my wife's urging I accepted her challenge to rebuild one.

This came home, very yellow very rusty and bits dropping off on the way home.

I spent a few minutes checking the engine over and drained the fuel that had been sitting for 17 years. Topped up the water and fitted a battery. turning on the key showed a melted ignition wire and a set of incorrectly installed points. So new wire and refit points and hey presto its alive and very smooth at idle. I ran it for about an hour all up and checked out all I could given many bits were missing like clutch and brake master cylinders and most of the bulkhead. Air lockers engaged and all gauges worked.

    Now the teardown begins

Now I can see just how rusty this thing is.

I think the bulkhead is beyond repair as it is missing most of its structural areas. The plus was the dash is in good nick and crack free.

Front chassis irons are completely shot and bulkhead outrigger on the drivers side is a write off.

Finally down to a bare chassis and the damage is extensive but not the worst I have had to fix.

I do have another chassis in much better condition but the idea of this project was to do it myself and take my time so I will rebuild it.

I gave the motor a bath and have decided to strip it and repaint it. It will give me a chance to look everything over and check the clutch water pump and refit welch plugs etc.

Hope your stage 1 is no where as rusty as the Bunyip is.

If it makes you feel any better, I bought a swb S3 as a restoration project. I knew it had some rust, but when i got it home and pressure cleaned it the chassis nearly disappeared! you can put your fist through the holes in the chassis rails! O well..... there are still lots of parts I can use/sell

Your project looks good. Those air lockers will be awesome. I have a 109 with a lsd trutrac and an eaton locker, it's great fun off road, but dam heavy to steer.
