I wrestled with mine too and how you have it is about how I ended up. My cables were wrapped in split convoluted tubing as they must have caused shorts by contacting bare contacts behind the instrument panel. May be worth considering also?
Attempting to put back the lower fascia. Cant remember how the heater control cables sit? Photos taken at time of disassembly not helping nor is the Workshop manual. It may just be as per the attached pic but it seems a bit tight. Has anyone done this recently? All suggestions gratefully received as usual.

Interesting.
Thanks for the heads up re the sct - i have heard several stories of fires behind the dash - I always take the live terminal off the battery when I park up.
I had another look and the cable was in front of the demister hose so i re routed it behind and things are not so tight now.

don't know about how to refit your dash bits, but I do agree that it is important to look and check how all those wires are in there.
on another note, when disconnecting the battery, always remove the negative, earth terminal first , unless it is positive earth.
that way you cannot accidentally short the spanner and cause a spark, or worse, weld the spanner and cause a fire.
Yes I have had my eyes water on a couple of occasions disconnecting the positive terminal ! - then I found a small adjustable spanner with a "rubber" handle in a cheap tool kit. Ideal. But you are right - I should be going for the negative terminal.

Mine is a stage 1 so the battery is under the driver's seat, but I have wired in a keyed battery isolation switch into the front of the seat box so battery isolation is easy as. It also acts as a theft deterrent....
