Where can I get Seat Belts fitted

    Hi All

I purchased a 1972 S3 Station Wagon late last year and it's time I started to do the work to get it on the road. The car I believe was purchased new in SA which creates a problem. In 1972 you weren't required to have seat belts in SA but in Vic you were. To roadworthy the vehicle here I have to put seat belts in. It has points for 2 lap sash in the front but none anywhere else.

Can any of you esteemed Land Rovians out there point me in the direction of a Seat Belt fitter and they would need to be in Melbourne.

I will assume that they will have to be engineered.

    Cheers

    Steve

I'm sure there are a number of companies that will install seatbelts, the problem might be finding someone prepared to fit out a 70's Land Rover. Worth tracking a few down & asking them.

Lap belts front outer is OK. You could also put lap belts in the rear as well as the centre front. Lap/sash front outer didn't come in till '88 and '98 for rear outer. Check out VSI21 on the VicRoads website.

A quick search only found child seat restraint installers, maybe they can help Child Restraint Fitting Stations - Kidsafe Victoria

Installing seat belts using genuine parts wouldn't need engineering? How could the inspector tell?

They were mostly fitted 'aftermarket' so installation varies. Maybe later ones were dealer fitted.

Trying to find the installation components can also be long winded.
I need to install seatbelts (properly) in my IIa LWB wagon. Just managed to score some parts from a LWB Wagon I parted out which will allow me to install the lower front points (under the seats) and upper rear seatbelt points. Also a forum member supplied some other parts so my only issue now is the top front mounts (currently someone has just drilled through the B pillar with no crush tube !).

Belts are cheap from the UK and meet Australian specs. Seat Belts for Land Rover Series 2, 2A and Series 3 - Paddock Spares

You could do it yourself and as long as it looks 'professional' it would probably pass a roadworthy.

If you want pictures of some of the LWB wagon mounts I can take some & post.

Thanks for the advice Colin. I am running a pretty tight budget but I want it on the road in time for a trip run every winter by the Land Rover Owners Club of Vic. I checked out the VSI 21 and for Off Road Vehicles Lap Sash was required for all outside seats and lap belts for the middle.

I've had a look at the baby restraint sites and it looks like there are a couple I can call.

The belts on Paddocks look reasonable priced.

Pictures would be good. When you get the time.

    Cheers

In 1972 Victoria required seat belts on cars. Check with Vicroads as to what the category of the Landrover station wagon actually is - if it was anything other than a station wagon, it would not , I suspect require them.

While I would recommend fitting them anyway, this could get you on the road quicker.

As suggested, duplicating the factory mounts is virtually certain to be accepted, but actually getting the factory mounts would be best - but probably very difficult, as the Series 3 'B' pillar probably incorporates this and is not easy to get. The rest of the mounts should be no insurmountable problem finding the parts, I would think. Try Ho hars for second hand parts.

Steve, on a completely different note, I do still have that heater for you - I found it the other day while clearing up the garage. I'll stick it in my car and call you next time I'm in the area.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Hi John

My S3 has mounting points for the lap sash in the front but none of the other belts. I agree I want to fit them even if they weren't required. I have a family who will be traveling in the vehicle.

Thanks Colin for the pictures I have seen that you can buy the B pillar mounts from Paddocks. I think mine has them or something similar.

I'd love to come over and have a look and perhaps the rest of your collection. I'll pm you.

    Cheers

    Steve
