Thanks Colin and John.
Colin, how hard is it to pull the box apart and replace the o-ring? Or should I just plan to top it up regularly [emoji28]

Hello from Brisbane.
I have an overhaul kit somewhere in my workshop that is surplus to my use - it will at least have the side plate and the end gaskets. There may be a full set of bearings also floating about there too.
I’ll take a look later and see if I can locate it - if I do then I’ll send a pm for the address.
Cheers,
Neil
Easier to get back together off the vehicle.
If I look back through some of my posts I'll find some pictures when I get home tonight.
Found it, read from here, there's a few pictures of it stripped and the problem with pitting.

Two of the bearing races are part of the steering shaft, if they're pitted it's time for a new shaft (well maybe a secondhand steering column instead).
I have pictures somewhere of a badly pitted shaft.

Hello again.
Yes, that’s largely why I had a surplus overhaul kit etc. I had the actual shaft examined before reassembly (regrettably after I bought the kit and a second set of Japanese bearings) and it was deemed to be excessively worn. So, I sourced a rebuilt unit from the UK via one of the local Rover parts outlets.
Anyway, I’ll have a look in my surplus parts jumble and see that I didn’t throw it out. I don’t believe I did as I seem to recall spotting it the other week when ferreting about for something else.
Cheers,
Neil
