    Series 3, 186 Engine

I have a 186 in My series 3, How do you tell if it is an XU1 engine? I remember the old HP block red motors. I will have to have a closer look at mine.

    XU1 motors were prefixed "JP".

Correction - The engines in Torana Model 82911-LJ - R with Production Option XU1 were prefixed JP. There is and was no such model as an "XU1". It was a production option "Special Vehicle Equipment". I was there.

I suppose it depends on your definition of the word "model" but it says XU1 on the guard and I have a copy of the original advertising brochure by GM who call it an XU1.

If you can ever get to see the warranty records the production tags clearly show model as 82911 and XU1 appears in the option codes beneath. The sales invoices were for model 82911 with add ons for options and seat belts. To us in GM-H Sales they were a GT-R with special equipment made in homologation numbers and could not be dealer ordered like an 81837 GTS350 which could be ordered by any Holden dealer for forward production. Torana with XUI were allocated by state sales office to dealers who deserved or needed them. Don't want to take 10 stock basic Kingswoods? No XU1 for you. Got a race team? How many do you want?

"HP" blocks/motors were nothing exciting as a lot of people like to believe.
They were just a higher performing engine than their little brother, the 149ci donk (which originally didn't have anything cast on the side) , in the early days of the "EH" series Holden's.
They were later marked as 179 on the side of the block.
However the 179 wasn't a bad goer in it's day, especially by the time they got to HD and we available as an X2 option with twin Strombergs and headers.

    Cheers, Mick.

Well at least you won't have to worry about the engine shooting out through the grille when bury your foot.
What is the full engine number?
It should be 161 and the a letter (H.L.R. or W) then a number sequence, or alternatively 2600 (H, L, or S) then numbers.

    cheers, Mick.
