    Stage one swivel hubs

I'm in the process of fixing a few oil leaks and tiding up the railko bushes, it seems the bushes and pins are not readily available , what have others been doing to get going again.
My plan was to buy some ORKOT and rebush the old bush housing and then either repin the existing pin or machine a whole new one

Have heard of taper rollers top and bottom any one done this

    thanks MIKE

I hadn't realised that the pins & Railco bushes are different from a Series III to a Stage I ? I had to look up Orkot but it seems a similar material to the Railco bush material.

Yes, the space inside the swivel had to be increased to allow room for a CV joint instead of the cross and bearing universal used for the previous 25+ years. The different bits are hard to find (or expensive) because relatively few Stage 1 Landrovers were built.

I am about to try putting stage one CV,s into a series to go with the LT77.
I bought new Chrome balls and the CV,s seem to fit in them OK. Its the top Railco housing hanging down that looks to be the problem.
To fix this I am considering going to bearings top and bottom as mentioned. It works in a Disco so why not here.

Bearings top and bottom worked on the first Series 1 Landrovers as well - but there is a good reason why they went to friction bearings to provide some damping right at the swivel.

I think that replacing the top bush with a bearing may well be viable provided that all the linkages are kept in top condition (tie rod ends, spring bushes) and suspension is not lifted and oversize tyre not fitted and tyres are well balanced. You may find it necessary to adjust the caster angle to prevent shimmy, but with leaf springs this is easily done by using wedges.

The difference with the disco is that sideways movement of the axle is directly prevented by the panhard rod, where on the series this is restricted only by the springs - and deflection of one spring by a bump alters the steering angle, potentially setting up a shimmy.

On my 80" I had to make new swivel pins because I converted the axle to Railko, rather than bronze bushes, which were original. I used EN26 in its unhardened state.

I would be wary of roller bearings as well; the first 80" had them and the handling became so alarming, Rover changed to bronze to try and get some steering damping,

The stage one Railkos are not as deep as a normal series three, so the pins are shorter as well. Would not be hard to shorten the pins but getting the shallow railko housings is.
If one could get the Railko fibre bush part on its own , it could be stuck into the Stage one housing then trimmed to size.

Paddocks only list the one for series 2 and 3.

Suggestion - Get a new railko bush, turn the bottom off it, and press out the bush. Then remove the bush from the old one on the lathe, and press the new bush in and turn off the excess.

    Would that work?
