I think the book measurements are with the spring flat, which is hard to achieve. My book says 920mm.

I'm not aware there is a correct orientation but I always put the slip joint to the front , be it front or rear shaft .
I understand in the unlikely event the joint separates it will be safer if its the other way around but thats is only likely to happen in an incorrectly set up lifted & highly modded &/or unroadworthy vehicle.
My understanding is that having the sliding member at the front is correct, as per both the parts manual sketch and the workshop manual instructions.
I fitted parabolic springs all round last year to my 1976 88'' and you are correct , the front is a cluster f***k, I was told that before purchasing and the shop sent the front springs away to have about 30mm of ride hieght taken out of them. They took ages to settle down an still sit abit high compared to the back, handles well but still not as smooth as my stage 1
In NZ so wont be much use,any good auto spring repairer should be able to help you
Spring length fitted is about 880mm andthe wheel sits in about the same place as your pic, not in the middle of the wheel arch shackel point straight down
