    NEW DOORS AND TOPS

A WHILE AGO I PURCHASED NEW DOORS AND GLAZED TOPS , WHAT A PILE OF RUBBISH, THESE CANT BE USED WITHOUT COMPLETLY STRIPPING DOWN AND PAINTING OR GALVANIZING, ALREADY RUSTING UNDER THE ALUMINIUM.
THE WAY THE DOORS ARE BUILT IS A DISGUSTING JOKE, THE CROSS BRACE IS SO THIN AND FLIMSY ITS YOU CAN TWIST IT BY HAND
FITTING NEW PARTS SHOULD BE AN EXCITING TIME BUT NOT THIS CRAP

I can't comment on your rant without knowing how they were stored, what preparation you did before fitting etc. etc. Some pictures of the issues would help.

I've fitted several sets of new doortops without issue and have stripped, repaired and re-skinned door frames.
You can't 'name & shame' on the forum but knowing where they came from might help understand your issues. There are a couple of companies re-manufacturing doors, doortops etc. and they are usually supplied with a protective paint applied but you do need to paint before fitting.

All the parts were externally primed , but under the cladding is just bare rusting steel, no coating of any kind, so at the most you would probably only get about 5 years out of them before they failed again
The only thing the door frames have going for them is they fit in the hole, really light steel, no shape on the piece under the aluminium, just a flat strip spot welded on so strenght reduced again its not even continuos around the curve at the top, the folded bar acrooss the middle that you fit a door handle to is that flimsy I think it would bend when you shut the door. Aluminium soft with little strenght
So its a complete stip down weld up all the corners stiffen up any flimsy bits off to the galvanizer and reclad with old skins, then try to get them to seal on the horrible one piece seals I thought would be a good idea
Series land rovering buy new parts strip fix rebuild and then fit
My point of my rant is to point out that the parts are useable but they wont last 5years and for the cost of paint ect I dont think thats good enough

Sounds like a cheap reproduction part.
Without knowing who you purchased from it's difficult to comment because there are good parts available.

Could you PM me details of the supplier.

Such is life. Don’t buy junk. I’m not sure what you expect to achieve with thread. If you don’t like the doors you bought then return them.

SP4x4 does ones with galvanized frames. They are nice and not expensive.

I bought the SP4x4 ones, and I am pretty happy with the quality. The only issue I has was having to clean the gal off the threaded rods, as the doors are obviously hot dipped. So I had to purchase a nut die to clean up the threads.

I seem to recall they were less than $400 delivered from UK to Australia for a pair.

    Cheers,
    John

What do I hope to achieve, let others know what they are in for, also I have learnt there are the SP4X4 doors and parts avaliable, can't really return them once all the skins have been removed .
At the time I was trying to buy the rocky mountain aluminium tops but got sick of the excuses for no stock
Gromit,,, its the usual suspect, their smaller parts come in blue boxes, infact the packaging was the best part about it.
The door tops aren't to bad, buy stripping galvanizing and reassembling they will be ok, but the doors are really nastily built, they will need welding ,strenthening and probably fit old skins with some hardness to the alloy, also none of the doors seem to come with the key hole in the panel

Its a pity every time I go to buy some ones better quality product they are out of stock or wont export, there is good gear out there , the ROVERDRIVE I bought has been good for about 80000km now, getting wet out of shifter shaft but still good
