Looking for some advice on options for above vehicle to either:
1. restoration of existing gear box with f**ked 4th gear (it screams like a banshee), questionable 3rd gear and leaking oil like a busted tap
2. reconditioned replacement gearbox (strait swap)
Either option I think I will remove the Fairly OD and go for the higher ratio gear box.
I would appreciate any advice on price range and recommendations for gearbox specialists in Brisbane area SE Queensland.
The screaming top gear suggests a bearing issue - quite likely a bearing in the overdrive! Also possibly a worn intermediate shaft in the transfer case. Noise in top gear probably means that the gearbox output gear and the intermediate gears in the transfer case are not meshing properly.
The input gear is held in alignment by the bearing in the back of the gearbox and the spigot needle roller bearing on the back of the transfer case, which is replaced by the overdrive unit (and in it depends on two bearings, the one inside the quill shaft and the one outside it). A worn bearing inside the input gear at the front of the gearbox can also misalign the output gear.
The intermediate gear is held in alignment by the needle roller inside it. The shaft this turns on can wear, and so can the needle roller bearing, but it is usually the shaft.
Top gear on Series Landrovers is usually noisy by modern standards though, and this can be exacerbated if any part of the gearbox or overdrive linkage is touching the transmission tunnel or any other part of the body, but since you have a Fairey overdrive, this is the immediate suspect!

That looks like the S3 I keep seeing at Middle Park shops , if it is I just said to my wife today that I had not seen it for a few days. Every time I see it I say to my wife thats a nice looking S3.
I would look very carefully to make sure the overdrive linkage is not touching the body when the overdrive is not engaged. These are usually noisier when the overdrive is in use!
