so I've been tossing a few different options around in my head regarding potential victims in reference to my dastardly plan of reviving and eventually regularly driving a series Land Rover.
One such potential victim is a nice looking 2.6 powered 5 door S3 FFR station wagon, with I'd say the closest to zero rust possible... but there's a catch... the motor is, well... dead.
Now, if the engine was happy, I'd just leave it in and call it a day, but considering I'd either have to rebuild (2.6 parts availability?!), buy another one, or stick a different engine in, I'm wondering what the best potential plan of attack would be.
In a lot of ways I'd probably like to do an engine swap to a diesel of some sort, as whilst I've nothing against the 6 cyl, I do like diesels.
What I'm wondering is what would be required for a swap from the 6 cyl, as I understand that the firewall, engine mounts and whatnot are a little different to the 4 pot that most of the engine conversions focus on. I guess the bell housing is also different in the 6 compared to the 4.
Sorry about my ramble, I am trying my utmost to learn everything I can, but occasionally I'll likely need a shove in the right direction (even if its someone telling me to stop being stupid)

200tdi donk would be a likely candidate i would think
almost bolt straight up i would think.
never done it tho, so i'd keep asking questions...

Yeah, it's probably the best bet from what I've read. But I would need a 4 cyl bell housing, as well as moving engine mounts most likely.

How common are they ??
Most were autos, is the crank the same on an auto & manual ? I've been offered one so I'm interested.......

You mention it's a 5-door FFR ??? I guess a Station Wagon body has been fitted ?
200Tdi could be a replacement if you can find one otherwise 300Tdi maybe. Lots of info on the Interweb showing how to do the conversion.
2.6 motors are around, problem is the fuel consumption & parts availability as you suggested.

The truth is... I don't actually know what's up with it, they guy that has it now got it like it is with the plans of sticking a 186 in... just never did so.
ID plate thingo states 'Truck, Utility, Light, G.S. Fitted for radio'
In the back there still seems to be the frame from the radio set up, but as I haven't been able to find any 5 door FFR's I guess the most likely thing is someone fitted a SW body.
That's the other issue I have with them... apparently they're pretty damn thirsty, and as I like diesels I'd much rather something like a 200/300tdi.
So saying, at this point I'm most likely going to grab a lovely looking little 88" 2a... in all original condition (also has the 2.25d instead of petrol which I like the sound of... it's also running, so that's a step ahead of the other one!), and as they're basically the same price and I won't have to stuff around with engine swaps + engineer cert. I feel it's probably a much more sensible idea for a first project.
At the same time... I do like the station wagons.... urgh, can't have everything!

A shorty has far less parts so easier for a first project plus the standard engine makes registration easier.
Can it be driven ? You might be disappointed with the 2.25 diesel performance. I haven't personally driven one so I'm only going by comments I've read.

That's what I figure, and there's definitely some nostalgia for the shorties... Dad had one for years; silly git sold it 5 or so years ago (likely with the hope that I wouldn't be encouraged to get into them if there wasn't one sitting in the paddock...) . It was a beautiful little '61 with safari roof, completely rust free and original as well... anywho, it'll be a great project for the both of us, we're both getting very keen!!!
Clutch is out for replacement, so can't be driven... But I've been driven around in a 2.25d for a very short spin once, and yeah... it was slow. But I'm pretty boring really, and mostly enjoy sitting at less that 80 anyway, I guess if I find it a problem I'll just have to leave a half hour earlier!
I'll probably be back in a month or so when we get started with questions etc![]()
