    1978 2.25 diesel engine noise

1978 diesel Landrover Series 3 ticking noise - YouTube

    Hi,

My father recently passed away and left his 1978 109 series 3 diesel to my son's and I.

It is in great condition, but brakes and engine need work.

Could anyone advise me on this noise in the engine before I start the process of restoration? The Landy is about to be shipped across to WA so I have a bit of time before I start!

    Thanks for your help
    Kristian

    ticking noise

I don't know, but I'd start with checking the tappet clearances for a sound like that. Let us know how you go, or if you want the tappet-adjusting instructions

If it is actual ticking, yes, tappets, but there are a wide range of other sounds that could be described as ticking, from the normal sound of fuel being injected, to worn timing chain, to loose precombstion chamber that is bad news.

    Thanks,

My Landy is on its way over to WA. We checked the tappet clearances last time it was started and they were ok. I'll go through it all again once it arrives.

I'll update when I know more.
