    Series 3 2.25 Diesel Engine Number 9 or S ?

    Hello All,

Due to some hasty stamping sometime back in the 1970s, it is hard to work out whether the attached engine serial number starts with a "9" or an "S" ?

I have a 2.25 Litre four cylinder diesel motor that was sourced from a Series 3. It may not have been its original motor. I took a photograph of the serial number.

Is the engine number 90643506C ?

I have to work out what size/type of glow plug to buy as there was an earlier thin version and a later model thicker version of the glow plugs in the Series 3.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Yes it's a 9 and is a 3 bearing SIII diesel.

    G'day Colin,

Thank you for the confirmation, Colin.

So with a 3 bearing starting with "9" according to All Four x 4 Spares it is the early large type glow plug Part number for reference: 568335. These glow plugs were... "fitted with 2.25L diesel to engine number 36623971". Accessed 20th January 2021 from, https://www.allfourx4.com.au/epages/...bjectID=216860

Then flicking across to a "Select Your Vehicle on eBay a "Genuine Bosch" glow plug for a 1976 Series 3. One of my vehicle's data plate is 5/76 or May 1976 ... shows a Bosch Part Number of 0250201039

I will check this Bosch number out at a couple of other different sources. So far none say what the diameter of the glow plug thread is. I need this diameter measurement to work out what size diesel compression tester kit to buy.

I previously had a mobile mechanic come to test the compression in the motor and they had no adaptors that were small enough - so it is not a one size fits all system.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Eureka...

    Hello Colin and All,

Eureka - I went to the Bosch site and found a listing for Bosch 0250201039 and down in the specifications it has the following information... Product Specifications ... Thread Diameter 12mm. Thread Pitch 1.25mm Accessed 20th January 2021 from, BoschSparkPlugs.net: 80006 $8.80 Bosch 0250201039 Glow Plug Diesel Engine Spark Plugs

Gee that only took me hours to find that little gem of information out!

Now to find a compression test kit with a 12 mm adaptor!

    The quest continues ...

    Kind regards
    Lionel
