    2.6L Exhaust Valve Removal

Hi all, hoping someone has been through an exhaust valve replacement on the 2.6L 6cyl engine and might be able to give some advice on removing the valves from these old style t head engines! The forum has been very helpful thus far in diagnosing why my 3 series has been running rough, I've found a cracked exhaust valve (picture attached) and have now removed the manifold and side cover to get to the valve springs. My issue is I've been able to compress the spring, though can't budge (what I think is) the Valve Locking Sleeve to get to the collets. There's nothing I can find in the workshop manual about the removal of these valves and so far no about of trying to compress these upwards with the spring has worked. Is there another method to get these off?? I've attached a couple of pictures, any help would be appreciated!

I used a motorcycle valve spring compressor.

Picture in post #23 FFR Refurb

I can't remember how it went but looking at your picture you just need to tap the piece with the arrow upwards to release the collets. May take some force because the collets have been jammed in there for years.
Maybe a washer in your compressor as long as the hole in the centre is large enough to release the collets. You may have to tighten the compressor then give it a thump to get the collets to release.

    Best of luck.

If you close the gap on the fork on the valve compressor this can be achieved by adjusting the threaded bolt in your 2nd photo, that will compress that top hat looking peace you have arrowed with the spring , then you should be able to remove the collets , A handy hint is to use a small magnet to remove the collets from the grove in the valve this will prevent them falling down into the engine fall down into the engine.

From the look of the valve you may need to have a new valve seat fitted or at least the seat ground.

Hi Scarecrow, I just cleaned up and lapped all mine. I had the same problem, and found a light tap with a hammer on an appropriate sized punch was sufficient to release the locking collar.

I also found that you can buy Permaseal head gaskets for this engine from Supercheap and Repco, if you’re in the market for one.

    Cheers,

    Matt

Thanks all, I have managed to get the compressor on the locking collar though couldn't get it to budge. I'll bring out the hammer...

I'm expecting the seats will have some work needed to get them right... Will report back!
