I recently rebuilt my front swivels, I was really pleased with the result, drove in a perfectly straight line for the first time ever! I set the pre-load to be 8-10lb, and used a dial gauge to help with the hub end float, all went well. But, after only a month or so of use there is play back in both front wheels. Drivers side is top to bottom, so I'm assuming I'll need to reset shims, passenger side mostly top bottom movement, but maybe a little side to side... so my question; is there normally a little 'settling in'? I can't see how the shims could really need 'running in', maybe the hubs with all the new oil seals and bearings may give a little and require the hub nut to be tightened a bit. But is it normal to have to retighten everything after such a short time? I'm a bit disappointed that only after a month or so, I'm going to have drain oil, disconnect everything and redo it again, doesn't seem right to me!

Nope, no FWHs... I'm starting to think I must have done something wrong, it all felt good when I finished (nice smooth movement on the swivels, hub turned nicely with no detectable movement), and it drove perfectly.Originally Posted by Discosux

Top/bottom of wheel movement, so I'm guessing swivels because hubs normally have movement left/right as well as top/bottom

Did you have to go extreme with the shims for the swivel at rebuilt time?
Is the swivel seal leaking goop?
if not, just remove some of the thinner shims, I never stressed about measuring pre load, just adjusted until it felt right.
Having said that, something must be waaaaay off to get noticeable movement, I'd pull apart and redo.
I thought the rebuild went pretty well; no leaks, all felt good and drove nicely... but, pull apart and rebuild just for safety sake I reckon... I really knew that, but just (a) am putting it off, and (b) thought someone might say 'yea, they all need another complete rebuild after 4 weeks!'

SubscriberWas the preload set with the seals in or without? The seals will loosen up a bit after a while causing this. If the preload is set without them and the bearings were seated properly they shouldn’t come loose - at least mine haven’t on the vehicles I’ve done this to.

I've done around 3 rebuilds, never ever had to redo them (apart from normal wear, many years later)
Were the shims dry when you did the preload?
Seals off... it's no good, I'm going to have to strip them down and take a look and see what's causing it! The odd thing it's both sides, so I'm guessing it must have been something I did, rather than some crap replacement part.
