    Fuel tank hoses

I have replaced the original RHS fuel tank on my 88” and installed another identical tank on the LHS along with a new filler assembly on the tub. I also have new hoses to fit on both sides.

    A couple of questions.

First, fitting the new hose on the RHS has turned into a bit of an exercise in grief - manipulating the filler body with the hose attached within the confined space of the tub and shield under the wheel box is difficult to say the least. Getting the hose end over the tank inlet pipe more so. Is it necessary to drop the tank itself to get the hose on or is there some trick to the job?

Second, I know that the standard filler hose won’t fit a LHS application without modification. I believe this involves cutting the hose and inserting a short section of pipe to get the right twist. However, I haven’t seen an 88” truck that has the correct set up and was wondering if anyone has a photo of what’s involved?

Another question related to the last - I recall reading some post ages ago that recommended earthing the modified pipe section for the LHS hose. Happy to take advice on that suggestion.

    Cheers,

    1. I don't have an 88 with a LH tank, so can't help with the detail you are after.

    2. Yes, the hose has to be cut and a piece of steel (or alloy would work) tubing, from memory 2", inserted with two hose clips.

    3. There is no reason whatever for the metal section to be earthed. Even if it did acquire a charge (unlikely), it is too far from any earthed part to possibly spark. However, if it really worries you it would be simple to run a wire clamped under the hose at the join and the top connection to the filler metal tube. If thin multistrand wire is used, and the strands spread out where they are under the hose, it should embed in the rubber and not cause a leak.

2-inch exhaust pipe cut off works.
I used a heat gun to warm original hose to soften and fit.
I think one of my S2a ex-Military may have LH tub hole but not sure if pipe work is fitted.
    Will have a look tomorrow.

    Hello again.

I did finally get the hose work completed for the two tanks but not without it becoming more complicated than hoped for at the start. It was simply impossible to get the rubber hoses on either side onto the filler tubes and tank inlet tubes with the tanks and fillers in situ - not enough wriggle room and the new hoses were fairly stiff.

I dropped both tanks and removed the inner part of the fillers from the mounting plate on both sides. That gave enough clearance on the left side but not the right. For some reason, not necessarily a logical one, the left filler tube could be reinstalled into the mounting plate without having to angle it first. Unfortunately, getting the right tube off and back on required angling the filler to get its lip through the hole and there wasn’t enough free space to do that. So, the fixing rivets had to be drilled out of the mount to get the hose on to the filler and then getting both it and the hose back through the side and into position for the tank.

The bottom of the hoses went on to the tanks as they were lifted back into position. No doubt someone will suggest that none of this was necessary but in this case an easier solution wasn’t immediately evident.

    Cheers,

    Neil
