    Unhappy Series III Restoration Help

    Okay, long story, short.

My father purchased a SWB Series III last year as a project to do in semi-retirement. Anyway, my mother passed away (59, bowel cancer) and understandably the project has gone a little sideways...to be honest the only things that were done was to remove an aftermarket bullbar and replace Sunraysia wheels with the "original" type rims.

I have been flicking through a copy of a Haynes (?) Restoration Manual and I really don't think my father has the right tools, mechanical aptitude and unfortunately, the drive now to really do justice this fantastic little 4WD.

Is there anywhere in Sydney that does "whoa to go" restoration? Or should I just get Dad to sell "Genghis"?

G'day All, Mate sorry to hear about your Mum, 59 ain't old it's my age. Maybe it would be a good thing for your Dad to get motivated on his project, you don't have to have a multitude of tools etc, just basic common sense if you can read, I'm a Reg/nurse and I have restored 6 Land Rovers all Series 2A except 1 Series 2 all are ex-military, another under construction + 2 trailers, here is a link to my shed page in REMLR if you have the time to show Dad you never know it might kick start him and give him something else to think about (is he coping with his greif?) anyway the link Series 2A 88 GS restoration -REMLR .
I would think unless your surname is Packer or something like that, a go to whoa restoration could cost upwards of $10,000- $15,000 or more and I'm probably a tad shy of the real cost and besides theres nothing like doing it yourself, anyway mate hope you can motivate Dad cheers and all the best Dennis

Have to agree with Dinty - there ain't many special tools required for work on a Series 3. If he needs some perhaps you could buy him a decent set of spanners for fathers day or his birthday.

Better still why not go and give him a hand yourself, he must be pretty lonely since your mum died. It may be just the thing he needs to break him out of his grief.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

That's the problem...my family and I moved in after Mum passed. I have tried gentle prodding and offers of help...hence my post.

I don't really want to see it go...but with one under 2 and another bub inbound...I have little enough time as it is...hmmm maybe I should make time....

Just plan some small things for when he's going to be home and suggest going to do them together or even just start them yourself. He could well join in himself.

There are a number of members of the LROC Sydney into restoration and the series people are planning to have more regular leaf spring trips. You missed one yesterday.

Why not plan to take the family and your dad to Cooma at Easter, even if just for the Sunday, it should hopefully put some enthusiasm back in.

After that there is Eastern Creek Classic and the All British Day at the Kings School all things that may help. There is also the Paxina Series 1 Weekend (camping) at Capertee on the 16th-18 May where there may even be a loan series vehicle if you wanted to come up by non-4X4.

Check out the trip calendar on the LROC website

After all you always get more fun out of a vehicle you restored yourself.

Hi Mate , sorry to hear of your loss . Myself i have had depression (getting on top of it now ) . One of the best things i have ever done is buy my landys and tinker with them . I have gained about 90% of my motivation through AULRO and REMLR with everyone helping me out even with the most stupid questions . I now look forward to getting out in the shed and seeing my landy come together . You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work on these old girls and if you don't have anytime today the landy will still be there tomorrow and the day after that . Just take your time and just do bits and pieces here and there . I hope your old man is coping and wish him all the best for the future . And remember if you do get stuck hassle all the guys here on how to fix or replace or even remove stuff . everyone here is alway more than willing to help out . Good luck .
