    Just a thought

    What about a 2.25 diesel?

They are probably quite hard to find, Im not sure? My old man used to have one in his Series III 109". He had an overdrive and I remember we used to be able to crank along at 110 ( downhill ). Off the top of my head I can remember fuel economy wasnt to bad, but that doesnt solve your speed issue sorry

One place to look for a 200 Tdi would be here:

Search Results - Pickles Auctions Australia

    or here

    ManheimFowles - Power Search Results

You could probably pick up a 200 Tdi Disco for not much and pinch the motor

    Thumbs up UPDATE

hi all, just a quick update

I am still looking for a 200tdi to swap out but after being quoted 4.5k to get one reconditioned, i think i might be out of luck. unless i find a spiffy/moderate one straight off.

Thanks for those links jock. frigging hard motors to find when you don't know where to look!

Am also going to have a look for some original tyres and rims as the 33's i have on it aren't solving any immediate problems with the fuel consumption

Really appreciate the help guys, love all the ideas thrown around for increasing speed and fuel econ. might end up with a mixture of everyones experience/ideas if my inkling is correct and a 200tdi conversion blows my budget away.

    Keep em coming!

    Cheers
    Aaron

Yep, Blurry, there in lies the catch. Most 200tdi motors have done some fair mileage by now, but I'm sure there must be still some better ones out there. Don't give up just yet. British Offroad in QLD quoted me $1500 for one about 18 months ago. Things may have changed though as they have changed ownership since then. Their contact no is 07 54451094, or check their website.
I've also read that you can run a 200tdi without the turbo, so maybe you could recoup some funds from the sale of it.
Definitely loose those 33s. If you still like the wide tyre look, we run 9.00R/15 or 235/75R15's on our 2.25 powered swb. Our fuel consumption is in the vicinity of 20mpg. Depending on the width, you may also be able to use the existing rims.

    cheers

Have you got the original rear diff (88in not hte 109)as they like to break if pushed to hard? So if/when you do put in the overdrive , as this is the only way to get more speed same rev's, you may have issues with the rear floating driveshafts.
I had an 88 S111 and it had free wheelers+ a holden 186 which IMHO caused extra stress on the rear and snapped/stripped the driveshaft gears 3 times.(more power and same gearing meant still did 90 -100 top but accelerated faster.
you would be better off buying the defender another poster was trading his TD5 as you get his car at trade price and he will get a better deal offering straight cash. You can keep the shorty as a project car with the saving on retail! ($4-5,000 for an engine + extras for seats and conversion+ new gearbox or overdrive unit compared to $11-12000 for a TD5 defender. easy decision)

IMHO you could get a fairly good small car for the price of the conversions: saving fuel, higher speed and less wear on the Landy. Do you not have the space for the SIII to park when not in use? I use a SIII for a daily driver, but I'm close enough to cycle to work (which I do a couple of days a week) so Landy fuel consuption not a big issue, and I can keep up with the 50km/hr traffic pretty well.

Only trouble with that is, there is the cost of insurance, rego and running costs on 2 cars rather than 1

i would buy a small economic car if i was driving to an office and back every day but i am subby'n as a tech and i have to cover the whole of vic, so have a bunch of tools to cart around with me and often find it handy having the space to fit boxes of things etc so a small car is really out of the question. plus like jock says i would then have to maintain 2 cars instead of one. great idea but at this point in time not really a feasible option

bonus is though if i fix the s3 up for day to day use it will perform better when i take her away camping and 4wd'n etc...

    Talking good news

So I took the old girl around to michael2's place over the weekend to fit an overdrive (thanks again mate), after we fit it and i was about to take off it stopped dead.

Michael made a few calls and then informed me that it already had a high speed transfer case! sweet! so he very kindly helped me put my old running gear back in and off i went!

So now with the elec ignition, extractors (didn't know i even had these till mike spotted them), electric fan etc it has been more than capable of doing the speeds i need, so all's i need now is a gas conversion!!

i have been driving it at 110 (on the highways between jobs) for the last few days no worries. it turns out that without a rev meter i just assumed that it couldn't go any faster, (thought she was goin to blow when i tried) but that's probably just because i have driven a car for so long now and haven't reacquainted myself with the sound of a landy going highway speeds.

Thanks for all the responses guys - much appreciated and thanks again for the help mike.

    2. LPG & 8:1 head (unless you can find a 9:1).
    3. Cam Regrind (all valves (inlet & exhaust) open 5 degrees earlier and close 5 degrees later). It's amazing what that on it's own does. It only cost just over $100, but you need to get the cam out. The specs are the same as the 6cyl 2.6 cam.
    4. High tyre pressures (50psi)
    5. Overdrive.
    6. Extractors (I only put them on because they were free, I think the 2.25 has a pretty good exhaust manifold).
    7. Removing the fan and fitting a thermofan added some kph, reduced some noise and allowed it to rev more freely.

with all this, on the flat I could sit on 110kph all day. economy didn't change much, hills still slowed it down.

PM me if you want any of these items, as the car is sitting unused and I could sell some stuff off it. The thermofan's in the shed, as I put the standard fan back on when I fitted an oil cooler.

If you can afford a Tdi conversion, then that would be the way to go.
Hi Micheal just read this thread above would not be a SWB am after a good body particulary a tub, the mechanicals are restored but the body is next on the agenda. Any way thought it was worth the ask, have a good weekend.
    Kindest regards

I just fitted a High Ratio Transfer case as part of a gear box rebuild to my S111 SWB and it will now do 100-110( on the flat) and you can hold a coversation at that speed ! Dont know weather it has improved the fuel econmy ??
