First question - what colour is the smoke? Usually described as Black, Blue or White.

Do you have a rich fuel smell from the exhaust?

Blue smoke is probably oil burning. If you have replaced the valve stem seals, this suggests that you have worn oil control rings - if these are worn, the probability is that the compression rings and possibly the bore are worn as well (could also be stuck or broken rings). There is a possibility that the bores are glazed - diesels are prone to this with extended periods of idling for example, and nothing more than deglazing may be needed. But I expect that a satisfactory solution to the problem will at the least involve new rings.

A compression check would be the next thing to do.

The manual also suggests that it can be caused by incorrect injection timing or tappet clearance.

And of course there are obvious causes such as oil getting into the intake manifold from the air cleaner.

i replaced the seals because i heard that they can be a cause of the smoke and for $20 i was willing to try we did a compression test and got 18kg/inch when its suppose to be 33kg/inch in the book they all read exactly the same i new they would all be close but i thought there might be a bit of a difference.if it is the rings and/or the bore how much do you reckon it would cost if it cost to much i might just put a new engine in it.the thing is to date it has cost me $4000 and it still has a few problems so im reely disappointed in that i could have bought one for that price with rego the other option is that i sell it but i wont get wat i have spent on it, and considering i have spent tons of hours working on it i would hate to see it sell for anything less then what i have spent
i have bought 2 cars off ebay and unfortunately the owners were not completly honest for example when i bought my s3 swb it had rust holes in the firewall and he said that he had never noticed it before
one day luck will go my way..................i hope

If those figures are correct, being so far below specification, then I would say that your engine would be very difficult to start, if it were possible to start at all. Are you sure that you conducted the test correctly? How did you fix the compression tester to the engine?

If it is just worn rings, and you are happy with the bore to cylinder clearance, then it would cost as follows:

    head gasket $50
    sump gasket $5
    rocker cover gasket $5
    rings (upto) $200

These are rough estimates based upon previous parts that I have bought.

There is a guy in NSW who has a new piston set for $350ish PM me for his details, but I have bought ring sets on ebay in the UK for a couple of pounds because no one wants them.

    I'll back that...

theres a couple of other things it can be too.

fouled precombustion chamber, injector timing off, injectors dribbling or the pump not making full pressure giving poor injection pattern.

hows the engine temp when its blowing smoke?
