Just read through this entire thread again and I just wanted to ask a couple of questions. I have only just got my Series III and haven't had a chance to look over anything yet so my apologies if some of this sounds a bit dumb.
If I have read & understood everything (I may not have) the issues around the original and simple idea are:-
1 - Hub needs machining to fit the rotor on/no off the shelf rotor available to clear the hub.
2 - 5mm spacer required.
3 - Engineering questions.
Please let me know if there were others - I may have missed these. Now, how much material needs removing from the hub to make everything fit? By the looks of the photos, it is the webbing that needs removing a bit?
Did anyone manage to get a response back from an engineer on if any of this was acceptable, or are we just making assumptions that it isn't? Same with the spacer - this is only needed to replace the thickness of the drum. The easiest thing to do here would be to machine the drum off to leave the spacer - again, has this been run past an engineer? I would think that as this is part of the original design, and doesn't add any stresses that are not normally there, then this may be acceptable.
I am currently talking to an Engineer about the VASS I need to get my Series III back on the road, so now is the ideal time for me to quiz him about upgrading the brakes, as this is one of the things he wants me to think about doing.
I don't have any spare parts to try any of this with, and I can't use the parts off mine at the moment, as it needs to stay mobile in the workshop it is in, but if someone has some bits they can either donate to the cause, or I can buy at a reasonable price, I would be happy to mock up this original setup and take it to my Engineer to see what he thinks of it all. I can get a disco rear brake rotor and calliper, but I would need the series bits - hub, etc. Happy to buy the calliper mounting plate if agrojnr can still make me a set?
EDIT - I only want to build one side for the engineer to look at, so I don't need a whole diff housing - I was just going to make a frame up to hold the hub, etc to show the Engineer what we are thinking of, and so it is easy to see what parts are made and what mods have been done.
Any thoughts/comments or help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers - Gav
