    Themostat housing/ head planing

Hi, can anyone please tell the bolt size and type for the 3 little bolts that bolt this bit to the head? and, My series has blown a couple of head gaskets recently between 3&4 with NO overheating. There are a couple of marks on the sealing surface in that area and I would like to get them cleaned off. I have been using copper head gaskets but I've been told that there are composite gaskets available, any opinions on what to do/which to use??
    Thanks in advance, Jack

Sorry don't know the size off the top of my head.

I assume you have a 2.25P? It is a fairly common problem. No harm in getting the head machined as it will also help compression ratio / performance.

Also check the block is flat. I personally think the copper gaskets are best, however I coat both sides liberally with this stuff:

I think they are 5/16" UNF, but I am not sure - the parts book does not give sizes, just numbers.

This assumes it is not a five bearing engine, which will be metric.

Hi there, you say that the gasket is blowing between 3rd and 4th ? just check the gasket is the right side up! silly and easy mistake, but it will leak and blow where you describe. Just a thought.
    Cheers.

    Thanks

Thanks for the replies guys, sorry about the very late answer from me,our computer fried itself (just out of warranty of course) and its taken me a while to convince 'er indoors that she would really like a replacement. The guys who planed the head for me recommended that I use the composite gasket, and the thermostat housing bolts turned out to be 6mm, (1984 5 main bearing engine)
    Thanks again, Jack
