    SIII 1978 SWB Hard Top

    Finally got myself a Land Rover



    After a reasonably thorough inspection, she appears to be in pretty good mechanical shape (especially given the price!), although definitely in need of a coat of paint... It runs quite well (original 2.25 petrol) - the plan is to go hard and get it rego'd before uni starts again in 6 weeks, I sure as hell have the spare time

    After a brief couple of euphoric hours I knew I had to come straight here, hat in hand, to seek out the fabled knowledge pool of the genii of the Australian Land Rover scene

    Disclaimer: Just to get it out of the way - I am an automotive fool; please accept my apologies for any stupid questions, of which I am sure there will be many!

    Firstly - some pictures (sorry about the quality, I'll get some up of the interior & engine bay asap);







    And a few quick questions -

    The bloke I bought it from says it needs a new rear diff (the car is entirely original, so I'm assuming it's the Rover diff), I don't seem to be able to find a supplier online or anything for sale - any help would be greatly appreciated! I locked the front hubs & drove in 4WD and the car was running well (rear diff, to the best of my knowledge, was making no noise but obviously wasn't driving the car)...

    Until...

    There was a loud knocking noise coming from the front, this happened a couple of times (didn't drive too far) before I decided to park & find the source. Haven't had a chance yet - any ideas as to what it likely is? If I can't find it I'll take a video/recording of the sound.


    What is this?



    I didn't think it was functional, switched it off (while the landy was off) and couldn't start her up again later on (I had, of course, forgotten about it!) and spent a good hour or so looking for a loose connection/blown fuse/poor earth What is this kill-switch designed for?

    That's all (for now )!

    BTW I removed the alloy bull bar it came with, not interested in it & am selling it or (preferably) trading it with an AULROian for parts - I'll post a pic here & in the markets area soon...

    switch is a dual battery selector switch

    very unusual to find one with a wagon rear door like that, and very similar to the one my dad had in the 80's, except his had sliding rear windows....

    what year is yours?

    Looks great mate!

    So what needs doing for Rego?


    Ring Brian at Land Vehicle Spares to get a Diff, but first - make sure it actually is the diff!

    Rear half shafts have a bad habit of snapping and this will result in loss of drive. You can pull them out without removing the wheel - just unbolt the drive flange and slide the whole thing out. Thats it.

    Don't think so...

    Wrong colour, wrong hardtop, wrong sunnies, wrong colour firewall, wrong colour radiator support panel, no bumperettes (I think you are referring to the numberplate protrusions?) no stickers, no bullbar, ...

    Yeah yeah, wrong colour, Should be bright yellow, at least its not pansy green like Gus is, repaints did happen...but then nobody repaints a nice coloured vehicle to baby poo brown.
    I didn't know there were different hard tops!
    So it may be a station wagon variant, what with the barn door.
    Too much Landy excitement for one morning me thinks

    Surprisingly little for rego (which won't take long to be unsurprisingly lots )

    I just went under the landy with a pressure cleaner, only two repairable small rust holes (10 & 5 cent piece), little to no surface rust (so far)...
