    After another 2 year hiatus (back in Aus but focused on work) I've finally come back to Buttercup. Gave her a quick clean and she's looking pretty good, looks like previous issues haven't worsened (little chassis rust, etc). Overall sitting outside for the past two years hasn't done much to her.

    I'm writing this remotely and struggling a little but there are two key issues I'm having:

    1. When I'm charging the battery (via leads) the electricals all work and I'm getting the initial sound of the car turning over (video here: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcA_oSZAU6E[/ame]) but nothing else is happening (despite a long period of charging). When I can I'll do some research but does anyone here have any initial impressions?

    2. The gear stick does not seem to be 'connecting', and is uselessly shifting around north of where it should be. A quick search of the forums suggests taking the floor off will reveal all; any other thoughts? Video here: [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKIKmohUwIA[/ame]

    First thing would be to check the battery, if it has been left uncharged for any length of time it is probably cactus, I know this from experience when I forget to regularly charge up one of the vehicles here. See if it holding charge after you disconnect the charger and then again if you put any load on it. A cheap multimeter will show you this.

    Second one with the gearbox, if it was working previously and is now just flopping around then it may have broken the gearstick itself below the ball that is shown in your video. I can't think of anything else it may be really as the bottom of the gearstick sits in cups across three selector shafts and it would be hard for it to have slipped out of that to allow the movement you seem to have. So yes, take the floor out and have a look at the top of the box.

    1. Engine. Bit hard to tell, but probably the battery is flat/had it.

    2. Gear lever problem is probably the grub screw that engages the slot in the ball to stop the lever rotating. This is probably loose. worn or missing. Remove the front floor and transmission tunnel to see the problem. I had to drill out the hole in the alloy casting, tap it, and make a sleeve for a new grub screw to go in.

    gear change

    hi there the gear shift lever is rotating because the grub screw is either loose or fallen out . in your video you can see there is a slot in the ball where the lever comes out of, that slot is where the grub screw slots in to prevent the gearshift from rotating. as with the engine its more than likely the battery, if you connect the positive lead from your jumper car to the positive on the battery but connect the negative to a good earth on the engine not on the negative of the battery this should crank it faster and start the car. if you like I could come and have a look on the weekend im not far away in oakdale. cheers furio

    Mate , I had a similar issue with the gearstick on a 109 I just bought. Most of the stuff under the gearstick was missing. Spring / washer cup / circlip etc etc even the bolts attaching the bracket to the bulkhead.


    I've got all the part numbers to hand should you need them.
